: Jackets... for tall skinny guys
Hey guys,
I'm having a really hard time finding a jacket that fits me (6"4', 150 lbs. => tall and skinny). Everything that fits length wise is "flattery" and I'm sure on the freeway it will cause some problems.
Any recommendation what to look for?
Thanks - Chris
johnmichael 10-27-2009, 10:53 PM Dude...Icon. I'm 6'3' and ~160 pounds and their jackets always fit PERfectly. They might be a tad more expensive, but the first time I wrapped up in one of their full leather jackets, I was completely hooked. :)

Gustavo 10-28-2009, 12:47 AM What kind of jacket are you looking for? Leather, textile, waterproof, 4 seasons, summer only, etc. etc....
In general I agree, most US market jackets are for more "prosperous" :D people than you. But there are quite a few options, depending on what type of jacket you want and how much are you willing to spend.
European brands are usually a good place to start. Rev'It makes jackets that look like they were tailor made for me. They are not cheap and not perfect (as you'd think they should at those prices) either. I have a similar problem with pants too. Those that have the right inseam are made for someone two sizes larger at waist. It takes a lot of shopping around, trying on everything you can find to get the right fit.

furley 10-28-2009, 06:28 AM Try a "Joe Rocket Alter Ego" in Medium or Large Tall.

No real preference. It's my first jacket and I'm just trying to get something that fits and protects.
Too many crazy people driving around in SoCal ;-)

OK, this is a good start. Now we know not only that you are tall and thin, but that you ride in SoCal (so maybe super warm winter jackets are not necessary) and that this is your first (and only for now?) jacket, so you may benefit from something that works in a wide range of conditions, like 4 season jackets (assuming you live closer to the coast, if you live inland where it gets hot rather than warm in summer, few 4 season jackets will really work).
Leather or textile? Leather gives better abrasion protection, but usually is not waterproof. If you don't mind carrying a rain jacket for those times it actually rains there, it's a good option. OTOH, they are usually cut like sport jackets, so they don't leave a lot of room for your street clothes underneath. Textile jackets come in all flavors, many include a built-in waterproof liner (or waterproof outer material), vents, many pockets and different lengths (not sleeve length, overall jacket length - waist, 2/3, and 3/4 length).
I'd recommend you take Saturday and go visit some of the larger shops in the area - try on as many different jackets as you can, see what fits, what you like what features are available and how much the ones you like cost. Try to sit on a bike that has a similar seating position to the Versys if they don't have a Versys on the floor (your own bike would be ideal, but not many shops will let you walk out of the store to the parking lot wearing a jacket you are trying on). If the jacket has a thermal liner, try it on with and without the liner. I find that many jackets that seem to fit fine with the liner are too loose without it, meaning that the armor will likely not be in the right place when you need it. Typically, a jacket that fits well without the thermal liner will be a bit tight with it installed, and that's OK as long as it is not too tight that it restricts your range of motion.
Once you narrow it down to a few options, you may be able to get good feedback here (or other forums) about what experiences people have with a particular jacket. Getting recommendations now is a bit like pointless, because you don't really know what options you have, or even what you want that jacket to do.

Thank you.
I already did five stores in my area, but non of them had really something that fits well. There are a few more and with the ideas I got here (and in other forums) I will go hunting again!
As soon as I have a selection I'll post it and see what you guys think!

Stop exercising and eat more fast food food! This has helped millions achieve that desireable pear shaped body. With some extra work you can even develop a hunch/stoop which will make your height less noticeable. ;)
johnmichael 10-30-2009, 05:20 PM lol...this thread has progressed from proper clothing fitment all the way to making skinny people fat and hobbled. ;)
Randy49 10-30-2009, 09:45 PM I'm 6'1" and 170 lbs. and I've got a Texport Nylon ballistic jacket with zip out lining and it fits well. I normally have to buy tall sizes for the sleeve length but length was not a problem with this jacket. I also got the pants. Both are windproof and water resistant with tons of pockets.
I also had tried on alot of jackets to find one that fit. Keep hitting those stores and you'll find one that fits. You'll just have to do more riding---not a bad downside.
Good luck!!
furley 10-31-2009, 07:15 PM i completely agree with randy49, find a major store that stocks alot of different gear in tall sizes, as far away as possible, then ride there. it's the perfect excuse to go for a long ride!

allriding 11-01-2009, 09:31 PM Have you considered Motoport (http://www.motoport.com/)? They make custom stuff, and their mesh kevlar should be perfect for the weather in SOCal. I ordered myself a Marathon jacket, but in stretch kevlar, it's much colder up here :)
