The visor inserts cause some blurring and reduction in clarity. The photochromic properties and insert integrity deteriorate rapidly, as witnessed in the Pro-Grip version.

I've had good luck with the pinlock insert in my Nolan with one exception. A couple times, in very hard rain, water somehow crept in and began to make its way between the outer shield and antifog insert. I had to take it apart to get the water out. More annoying than a safety hazard.

If you put the antifog insert in when it's brand new onto a clean outer visor the clarity is good. I made the mistake of cleaning my visor with Plexus before putting the two together and the distortion was awful. The directions call for cleaning in mild soap and water. When I did that the clarity was back.

You have to be nice to the antifog insert which does not have the scratch resistance properties of the outer shield. That said, you can huff and puff all you want with the shield closed up tight and it won't fog.

I've been using a pinlock for about two years now, works great for me, I haven't had the water issue and I've ridden in some heavy rain.

And yes, you have to be VERY careful with the insert, it scratches easy. Also at night it can cause some starring and reflection of lights, but it's minor really.

The best piece of gear I have...I can't fog my helmet (RF-1000), even in 40F rain...

Fogcity fogshield with the sunblock option, used for 5 years now and it works great, position correctly and there is NO line in the vision area, the visor turns a blue or if you get the darker one,a green to block sunlight and goes clear in darkness.

EDIT!! Dear Lord the price of those hyper optic inserts have gone Up!! No way I would buy one at the current price, I will cat crap it ,on a new shield.

If you do not wear eye glasses the Fog City Hyperoptics is excellent!! Yes, they have become pricey.

Last year I really needed to start wearing eye glasses and needed another solution for my eye wear and shield.

ZOOKE Z-WAX works well, but does need to be reapplied now and then. I'm also using a Respro Foggy Mask and is another excellent product for those with and without eye wear.

Hi Guys new guy posting for the first time in the UK. I use a pinlock insert with an x-lite helmet which is great and we have alot of rain and i have never had any problems. Would recomend using unscented baby wipes to clean visors both inside and out works a treat and they are very gentle on the plastic. Hope this helps

I just spit in mine. If it's cold and clear, I add a little Red Man for tint :-)

I read a review about the Clarity product at Webbike World - http://www.webbikeworld.com/r4/clarity-defog-it/
I ordered some from Amazon and tried it out last week. The stuff really works! I often ride late at night when it's cold and dark and coming from a warm building into the cold night air usually fogged the visor so bad that I'd have to ride with it partially open. I tried a number of products and a few worked OK so long as the conditions weren't too extreme. However, after a couple of minutes, even the best of them would fail and a layer of fog would start creeping up the bottom of the visor.
I tried the test that webbikeworld used - holding the treated visor over a pot of boiling water - no problem! Since then, I've ridden several times in conditions that would have previously resulted in heavy fogging with none evident. What I'm really looking forward to trying it in is some warm, wet summer weather. Heck, right now, I'd settle for warm, dry summer weather.

I wanted to try that product but it's not possible to order it in EU for now. I'm going to try pinlock on Schuberth helmet in a few days.

Here are some more real life impressions from ADV forum:

Anyhow, 5$ is not much even if it slightly works.

If you rub a little washing up fluid on the inside of your sheild everyonce in a while it should be OK for you.

Pinlock insert is a truly magical thing!

Before getting it I had to endure a month with a visor witch is untreated for fogging (because it's meant to be used with pinlock). That meant instant fogging of the entire visor at any speed less then a 45km/h, and that is a nuisance in city riding.

But the pinlock is a wonderful remedy. I can sit at the traffic light with the visor closed (5℃, 85% humidity) and there is no fogging at all. No more holding my breath at speed bumps or fiddling the visor up and down at stops.

Cheers.

+1 on the HJC pinlock insert.
