I have a basic site for my gym. But i would love to make it more professional, offer a forum on it, and just dress it up. I know someone who made a nice "this is what it could be " type of page for me to look at. 1600 for everything.

Whats a good price? I really don't know.

It's difficult to say without knowing exactly what they are doing for you and how many pages your Website has. But if they are professionals even if it is for just a facelift sounds good to me. I own a Web Design and Development company http://www.visionden.com

Without an exact idea of what you want, it is really hard to quote.

One of the biggest question marks is the forum. Does your host have out of the can stuff you just install, configure, and skin, or is there some big custom job that has to happen?

If this guy is saying $1600 for it all, that is pretty good. But who owns the code, and are they expecting you to come to them for every edit on the site? Support hours add up, quickly. I would recommend looking into a decent CMS (some are free) to run the site so that you don't have to go to this guy for every last edit (say you change the rates).

To me, your first site looked good. But, wanting a forum too is something else.

I'm in the market for one of those build-your-site offers to possibly market some robotic punching arms I just got a patent pending on and see how that pans out.

The "what it could be" is a Joomla installation. I don't know the US market but I believe that it is a reasonable price for a really good Joomla project. Installing and customizing every component to meet your needs, some design touches to make it a bit unique and of course training on using the Joomla CMS.

The example that he presented you, in my opinion, is not worth $1600.

I would charge around 1000 euros for the whole project, which is around $1600.

PS: If you created the website you have online now by yourself, you should be able to work on Joomla and deliver a nice result.
