: How do you clean your mesh riding pants?
SoCalGreenie 08-08-2009, 04:41 PM I've got a pair of Fieldsheer pants, and the label, first thing wrong, describes the care for jackets not pants, and then goes on to list everything you can't do, leaving only "spritz with toy watergun and gently dab with tissue"... !

potus2012 08-08-2009, 05:28 PM Dude, sun faded bug gut splattered road grime encrusted gear is a badge of honor. Shake it out to keep the mesh somewhat open and then bask in your own coolness.
I used to throw my gear (non-mesh) in the washing machine from time to time, but it has lost its water repellancy so that might be a bad idea. Shouldn't be an issue with mesh though.
A few months ago I did a pie run and saw a guy wearing the exact same model Joe Rocket jacket I had. (Discontinued a decade ago) Difference was mine was faded and grimey and his was bright and shiny. I liked mine a lot better.

All mesh is probably the same so; I have 2 first Gear Mesh Jackets. I hand wash in the kitchen sink with lukewarm water and a little washing machine detergent, then rinse thouroughly, put on a hanger outside and hose the crap out of them with clean water,. Being mesh they dry quickly and I haven't had any shrinkage. Oh, also take out the foam armour before you wash the jackets, same process for pants.
I might be wrong but it works for me.

SoCalGreenie 08-08-2009, 09:41 PM Right on, Nick. Thanks for the help. I figured it was just a matter of using some care, but I wanted to hear others' experiences.
Bear on a bicycle 08-08-2009, 10:45 PM Hmmm... I don't have pants, but I wash my mesh jacket in the washing machine on gentle...

ednukey 08-09-2009, 01:33 AM Hot water with a generous amount of Arm&Hammer, left to soak for a bit, followed by a hot rinse with the shower nozzle has worked the best for me - when it comes to getting the funk out of synthetic stuff like mesh. It also seems to help delay the onset of funk as well. It doesn't do much for getting stains out, but then again I'm usually only concerned about de-funkifying.
atgatt 08-09-2009, 09:14 AM Had them for about 4 years and never cleaned the pants or jacket. The wind and rain do a decent job of that.
VeeWNC 08-10-2009, 11:16 AM I've had my Olympia top and bottom now for about 18 months and it's holding up well. It looks really grungy, but I like the 'well-worn' look. I just toss 'em in the washer on the gentle cycle, using cold water and Arm and Hammer detergent. I used to take out the padding first, but I don't bother with that anymore. I usually air dry them, but if I need 'em to ride, I toss them into the dryer for a few minutes. A Clingfree helps make them smell a little better. I can't see that this method has hurt them at all. If my riding armor won't stand up to being machine washed, I'll switch to another brand. I can't imagine that a suit that won't handle a gentle wash cycle being of much use in a crash.
As for stains, the only thing that I've found that helps there is to get them out as soon as they show up, before they have a chance to dry. If you do that, a little soap and water will take out just about anything - Dawn is my favorite. Once it dries, it's hard to get out and bleach might weaken the fabric.
Of course, leather gear is a whole 'nother ball game...
maddjack 08-29-2009, 10:07 AM I follow the washing instructions from the manufacturer, usually written on a tag somewhere in the gear,oh and always remove Armour before washing
mcampana 08-29-2009, 10:18 AM I use the "hand wash" cycle and cold water. Line dry.

+1 :thumb: and I use "WooliteŽ For All Delicates" in the washer.

I can't believe I missed this!! Too funny!!

ayermedic 09-28-2009, 11:56 AM If you want to clean out the mesh wear them inside out or ride backwards!.... OK...OK...Usually any of my non-mesh gear I wash on a gentle cycle and then hang it up to dry.
Bob in FL 09-28-2009, 04:51 PM Never washed any. Love Bugs dry up and fall off. Usually rub a hole in them before they get too grungy.
Bones 09-28-2009, 07:40 PM When I finally decide it's time to wash riding gear, it goes in the bathtub with Woolite where it's hand washed, then rinsed in water, then hung to dry. Not quite April Fresh, but it gets the job done.
Boricua 10-01-2009, 10:59 PM Murphy recommends, when everything fails, read the instructions.
They are usually in a tag inside the garment.

Ah yes, that's exactly how I started Boricua, by reading the label... but my pants apparently are mislabeled with a jacket tag. Even still, it strongly discourages machine washing or drying among other normal washing methods. Hence, I reached out to the V Forum brain trust for guidance. And they delivered, as always.
Thanks to all! Um, no, haven't washed 'em yet. They still look too new :D
"Ride in the rain" was a comical suggestion!
