: North Cascades Verys Ride Aug 22-23
davidweed 07-29-2009, 08:10 PM Putting it out there for anyone interested - Some of us PNW Viagras/Versys riders are planning an overnight N. Cascades romp on the weekend of 29-30 Aug. Over the N. Cascades highway to Winthrop and then dirt FS 37 to Concunully (cultural meccs that it is). Then next day 97A through Chelan and back over Steven's, or back over 20 - what ever everone wants to do.
Currently onboard: Myself, Alvis, and Machog. Sadly our esteemed Gustavo is unable to join us this time out. So - the call is out. WHo wants to play?
David
hikewithmike 07-30-2009, 03:08 AM I am really on the fence with this one, and will have to wait to make a decision until the time comes. If I can't move up the hill till that weekend, then I won't be able to come. If I can move earlier in the month, that its more of a possibility.
What is the overnight accommodation supposed to be (hotel, campsite)? Is it over-nighting in Concunully?
More importantly, what is that length of road like. My only non pavement experience is about a mile of gravel farm road...perhaps I should finally do Mountain Loop up and over into Darrington to get some more dirt/gravel expereince.
panamafrog 07-30-2009, 08:45 AM Mike asked the questions I was going to: Hotel or Campsite? What is FS37 like? I've done one dirt road before on my Bandit that had me in fits. Spooked me for way too long. I know the Versys will be better, but rutted trails with drop offs really make me nervous. I'll check with the both bosses on the date.

alvis 07-30-2009, 09:42 AM DW,
We had orginally looked at Aug 29/30 as the weekend...did you need to bump that up a week? The last weekend would be better for me...
alvis
davidweed 07-30-2009, 09:55 AM Al - my bad. We did plan for that last weekend the 29th and 30th. I just f'd up reading the calender. :D I will correct my e-mail. SO THE RIDE IS AUG 29-30. Thanks for the catch Al!
DW
davidweed 07-30-2009, 10:03 AM HI guys -
The plan as it is shapping up is to overnight in Concunully. THere is a nice state park for camping, and a small hotel for those that desire that. FS 37 is 43 mi of, apparently, pretty nice forest service road. I have had some reports from some of the guys on ADV who have recently been over the road and say it is in great shape and quite doable. I have a minimal amount of dirt experience, as do the others and so we will be taking things reasonably. I am certainly not adverse to bagging it if the road get too crappy.
Please not the correct date (thanks Alvis!) of 29-30 Aug.
David:cheers:
panamafrog 07-31-2009, 12:01 AM Have a good ride gents. I've got prior commitments for the weekend of the 29-30 so I won't be able to attend. I expect to hear good tales, and photos too.

I thinnk i am gong to tent it at the state park there in town. It's a pretty nice park actually if anyone else is into camping the night.
davidweed 08-11-2009, 11:40 AM So just a reminder/clarification - the trip is from 29-30 Aug, not 22-23 as the thread title indicates (via my dumb error).
So far it looks like we have:
myself
Machog
Alvis
Alvis' Bro (sorry, Al, i don't remember his name)
Bob
Maybe meet off I-5 exit 205 (there is a Denny's on the right after a right off the exit and some nearby gas stations (that's petrol to you, John:) ) for fuel-ups). Then up through Arlington to Darrington and then to Rockport and Highway 20. This is a MUCH nicer way than the route through Burkungton and Concrete. More curves. Less LEOs. Better scenery
Looking forward to it!
DW
alvis 08-11-2009, 12:21 PM My brother can't make this one, so it's four for the moment...
Bob,
I'm planning on reserving a room next week...any preference?
Thanks,
alvis
bob shafer 08-11-2009, 12:25 PM Another way is going from Granite Falls to Darington on the "Mountain Loop".
I have gone this way several times, and it is even better!!! About 30 miles of nicely graded gravel roads. http://www.northwestplaces.com/trips001/MtnLoopHiway.htm

panamafrog 08-19-2009, 09:13 AM Mike
You might want to do the ride over the Cascades and then back over Hwy 2 through Leavenworth, etc. That is a lengthy ride, somewhat over 400 miles from Kirkland. Good ride though. See link attached to map.

davidweed 08-26-2009, 09:50 AM Well Guys:
Lets meet off I-5 exit 208 (Arlington) at the Denny's lot (on the right) at about 9am. There is gas available there too. Bob, I like your idea about the Mountain Loop highway but I am pretty much a dirt newbie and thinking that the road from Winthrop to Concunully might be all I am up for this time (about 40mi or so) - hope that is ok. Maybe we can put together a day ride for the Moutain loop?
If 9 sound too early or late (Al, I know that your coming from Bonney Lake so i didn't want to make it too undoable - thought the invite to crash the night before is still out there) or you would all prefer meeting somewhere else let me know!
Man, am I looking forward to this. Sounds like John will be joining as well if he can tear himself away from his NEW BOAT fro long enough :)
DW
Machog 08-26-2009, 10:10 AM OK boys, I'm in!
Al offer to crash here is open as well-not sure you need to be staying with a 'shrink' with your delicate mental condition!!!!:badidea:

Maybe Im missing something . When I look at the map, it looks like the same route both days---an out and back from Monroe. Routes fine, but why meet in Arlington, which is quite a ways north for most of us from Monroe? Looks like everyone is going to ride north to Arlington and then turn around and ride back 30 miles to Monroe..
Confused in Seattle
