: debadging?

I've looked through most of the photos, has no one else debadged? While I had the panels off to fix the buzzzz I removed the kawasaki and versys decals, and now it looks really clean! I'll try to borrow a camera tomorrow to post some pictures. With those removed there really aren't any markings left to identify the bike, I kind of like that look.

Just bought mine last week and LOVE it! I don't want to trash the paint, but would like to get rid of the decals. What is the best method?

Warm up decal with hair dryer. Peel with fingers. Use Go Gone or rubbing alcohol to take off all adhesive and wax.

Believe it or not.....They just peel off .

I tried that tonight, and I could remove the garage stickers easily but when trying to remove the "Versys" stickers, the glue stayed on the bike...My Versys is black, so I think Ill just let it in the sun tomorrow, and try to remove it when it's very hot...

you will be able to rub off with you hand wen adhesive is warm

x2. A hair dryer works great if they won't just peel right off.

Tried it and it works great indeed. Although I was careful not to overheat the plastic (found out when I was a kid that you could melt plastic with a hair dryer! :P )

It came right off, and I cleaned the remaining glue residu with my helmet cleaner (cleaner for plastic and metal). I removed the dealer sticker and the Versys on both sides but kept the Kawasaki I think it looks ok on the black versys.

The stickers on the swing arm come off easier that the ones on the bodywork. Why do we need decals to tell us what the air pressure and chain play should be? Also, I could care less what EPA regulations this bike meets! :D

Warm up decal with hair dryer. Peel with fingers. Use Go Gone or rubbing alcohol to take off all adhesive and wax.

I debadged mine the first day it came home. I have always used Goo-Gone after any sticker/decal removal to get the residue off. It works like a charm, apply the GG, wait ~30 seconds and wipe with a rag. Smooth as glass and won't hurt paint/wax/clearcoat.

I love it! I considered debadging mine and putting Ducati stickers on it too. There are lots of Ducatis in my group of friends and everyone calls the bike a "poor man's multistrada" anyway....

A few days ago, I got an SMS from a friend I hadn't spoken to in several months. I mentioned getting a new bike - a Versys.

He replied back: "I had to Google it. It's basically a Kawasaki Multistrada 650?"

Yep. :D

The first thing I did when I got mine home(two weeks ago) was take the badges off. I used a small hair dryer and they mostly came off. I used WD-40 to take off any remaining adhesive. It looks great but now I have people constantly asking me about the bike. I like the Ferrari idea, but my sense of humor would probably have me going the opposite direction. Kia or Hyundai?

Peeled mine off with fingers after warming them a little with hair dyer. The remaining glue comes off with Plexus nice and shiney when you're done, don't foget the one on the shield while you're there...

I can't get my bike near a hair dryer...is there another good way to debadge? I was contemplating using a few hot rags and holding them to the decals until I could easily peel off, then some cleaner to remove the rest. Any ideas?

I love that seat! It looks like it lowers and keeps you from sliding forward also. Where can I get one?

That is Kawasaki's low gel seat. I did not get it because it is lower, I got it because I wanted a firmer seat. It does sit a few inches lower but is no narrower than the original item. My legs are still splayed out, so the real-world height reduction is not the claimed two inches—maybe an inch at the most. I installed one of Speedy Gonzales' shock relocaters to lower my Versys and that modification does work well.

The seat does limit front-to-back movement, and it does solve the forward sliding problem, but it ever-so-slightly crowds the family jewels. So far, that has not been a problem. It is much firmer than the too-cushy stock seat, but it has gel padding and, thus far, is much more comfortable for my skinny butt. I think it is a significantly nicer seat than the original, too, much better quality. The cover is a nice high-grip material and the piping/lettering is high quality.

Look on eBay and you can find low Versys gel seats for about $400. I got mine from a fellow Versysian for a bit less. Many folks like the low gel seat but others do not. If you are looking to get your feet closer to the ground, I would recommend a lowering kit. If you want a more comfortable seat that does not make you slide forward, this might do the trick.

Just wanted to inform everyone, using a hot rag (dip rag in coffee/tea warm water) and holding over the decals for roughly 30 seconds allows you to peel off the decal without any problem, and not a single bit of residue.

I "debadged" my steed today and it looks great. Got'um wondering now!

By the way, here is an excellent adhesive remover I've used for years and it doesn't harm any finish.

You guys who can get the red model have it all your way for replacing the stickers. I like the Ducati badge but the Ferrari idea is great fun. Here in Australia the V only comes in green. The colour is so identifiable as Kawasaki that there's little room for playing around.

http://kawasaki.com.au/index.php?category=motorcycles&sub_category=5&product=89

I'm told the 2009 model here will be burnt orange only. No change in spec, but apparently they are going to rotate the available colours each year.

WD-40 on a soft cloth works great to remove glue, been using it for years, no harm to paint. Works to remove flung up chain lube too. Than I wash and wax and nobody be da wiser. :thumb:

If spit bothered me I wouldn't ride in Texas. More people chew in this state than anywhere I've lived. As a matter of fact, if there's moisture on the road it probably is brown and slimy and not heavenly precipitation.
But I will pay attention to the seat more closely before I sit down....

Thanks. I've been "Bones" since I was a kid and I've had the same skull heads on my ST1300 for a few years. When I got a Versys with a "clean slate" I got some more and went a step further and ordered the words. (www.edecals.com (http://www.edecals.com/custom_decal_designer/instant_sticker_designer.html)). Except for MOTO BONES, there's no brand ID. Even the Givi emblems in the panniers came off in favor of DOT red reflective. With all the snow on the ground I haven't ridden the bike to see what kind of responses I get, but I am looking forward to it. C'mon spring!

He walked over and said, "What's a Moto Bones? Or maybe I should ask what was it before it became a Moto Bones?" I told him the truth, so I'm still waiting for someone to come up and say something like, "You know I used to have a Moto Bones when I was living in Italy." Reminds me of a British TV sitcom where a particularly stupid character was trying to talk tough about his super hot Italian car (he had no car).

The other bloke asked what kind of car it was.

I don't have the rondels from Contractor yet, but I'll be putting them on. Even still, within an hour of having my bike the Kawi stickers were off, leaving nowhere on the bike with a badge, except for "Versys". I still wanted people to know the model.

Without any badges of Make, I still get lots and lots of people that 'think' it's a beemer, most likely due to the blue and the shape. It's cool, I really like beemers and my dad and uncle ride beemers (I'm the freak, they think) so it's not a bad thing.

I say do what you like and think it would be absolutely hilarious to get the lot of us together with all the Guzzi, Honda and other various stickers and get a group picture of the bikes. That'd be one for the scrapbook for sure.

In the end, it's your bike, and your money in it, do what you want.

Of 42 Hondas I have owned, the red 1990 TransAlp was my all-time favorite. My main complaint about it was the power(or more accurately, the lack of power). If Honda offered a new TransAlp with improved power, I almost certainly would have bought one. One ride on the Versys and I knew I had found what I was looking for; but I am a Honda person, and I have never owned a Kawasaki. For me, the Versys was everything I liked about the TransAlp with the bonus of POWER!!!! But it is a Kowa... Cowa... man, I can't even say Kawasaki. I can't be seen riding a GREEN Kawasaki. Then I found a new leftover RED Versys. Then I found this forum. And then I found this thread. Problem solved!

I guess the lesson I have learned is: I am not a Honda person. I am not a Triumph person. I am a motorcyclist. For me, today, the motorcycle I like best happens to be a Kawasaki.

Definetely replacing my stickers, one side already gone thanks to a road tire / dirt road / adrenalin / combination...

toying with V659 , V Beater, Samarai V, Little Big V...

Like most of us I love this bike but it is really hard to say 'versys' without sounding 'gay' (not thats theres anything wrong with that), I hate the name.

I think I like a big V with a small 659 next to it..and perhaps a monster graphic

look forward to seeing more ideas, I still haven't made my mind up

what does "659" signify? why not use displacement, 649?

i just pulled the decals from mine, they were so cheesy it was driving me crazy. why can't KHI come up with a decent tank logo, like the tuning forks or the wing? even that diamond-shaped 'S''is better than 'Kawasaki' across the tank on a cheap sticker. lame.

anyway, in lieu of a hair dryer or warm weather, a towel soaked in hot water does the trick. now i'll have to figure out where to find some "goo gone" since alcohol wasn't getting it done.

mmm, ok I'll share the secret '659' is a rarely used code (known only by myself, dan brown and a few others) it loosely means 'illiterate one, who has suffered many concussions'...

I meant 649, although I'm leaning towards (samarai) Sami V, A go anywhere sort of ninja..I like that connection.

I lightly dropped sami v in the dirt (sand) today, there are lots of ways to get the stickers off if you think about it or dont. I'm still happy cause I got to climb a boulder and meet a long legged beauty along the way.
(see vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bF565Lh83J0 ).

Heavy bike to pick up when your stuffed and on soft slippery slopes, I wonder what a gs1200 must be like to pick up in those conditions. Yeah I know, dont drop it in the first place but as my grandpa never said 'if your going to push the envelope, you have to expect some paper cuts along the way', although I bet he wished he had (said it)...confused, we only just met?

I really wanted to debadge my Ninja 250 because Kawasaki Canada were such d1cks when I bought it, but the Kawi logo was clearcoated over on the tank. This one is a no brainer. De-badged and re-badged. I ordered the decals online through eDecals.com. The custom decals were made for a very fair price, they even included a spare of both designs for free. I found the shipping was pretty expensive, but they did a very good job on the packaging and delivery was in just a few days. The decals' quality seems very high and overall I'm totally pleased with the result.

I think my decals lasted through my first service at most. What easy decals to remove, much better than most m/c's.

Having grown up in Panama, I had to add a decal with something depicting that location. And in the style of the Diablo Rojo buses that ply the streets as one of their means of transportation.

And all of you are right, what a hoot it is to run into someone who doesn't know what a Versys is. They are totally befuddled.

I debadged the bike soon after purchase. The first new decals (War Machine) I put on looked great but did not last because the stencil shape of the letters were too delicate, kept peeling at the sharp corners. I've removed the 'Versys' decals from mine but have left, and will not remove, the 'Kawasaki' decals. In the UK, Kwaks are a bit of a niche market - not rare - but certainly significantly down on numbers compared to Honda, Suzuki, Yam - even modern Triumphs (Speed/Street Triples etc) are bought in significant numbers. To me, the brand Kawasaki has always been a little 'edgy' or different - I like that and am happy to leave the badge. However, with the "what the f****'s a Versys?" title gone, mine will be re-christened with a different name - one that reflects the style that I have modelled it on. When I can find a quality decal maker it will become a Kawasaki V-MOTARD .

I bought my versys used, and looked at two other bikes before deciding for third one. I turned down the first one because it was missing badges. To me, that meant it had an accident and was repainted. Just mentioning ;)

Also, I think there should be clear coat on factory decals, as Honda does.

ATYC

I think, most often, Kawi does put a clear coat over their name. That was the case on my Ninja anyway. I think the Versys gets de-badged and re-badged a lot because they make it so easy. ANOTHER cool and unique thing about this bike! Woot.

twowheels
08-14-2011, 10:13 PM
They apply clear coat over the decal when it is applied to a metal painted surface like a gas tank but not on decals put on plastic surfaces like fairings. On the Versys all the decals are put on the plastics so they can be easily removed.

Decals removed from plastics are not a good way to detect accident damage. Decals removed from metal surfaces however will indicate a repaint.

If it was in an accident and repainted, it would be more likely to have decals than not have them. Wouldn't the replacement of decals be part of a normal repair?

ATYC

Just that. A pointy thing. I took the reflectors off which left an empty hole. I have a set of these spike bolts that I had on my old Ninja. I use four of them as plate bolts and I spun the two spares in here. Pointy things. My valve stem caps are little grenades.

Doctor Shifty
08-15-2011, 07:32 AM
We don't get reflectors in those holes here in Oz - just another bolt. However, I suspect pointy things would not get past a rego check here.

I wonder if I should get some little frogs as valve caps. :)

Yeah, Maico was mostly known for their killer open class motocross racers. I always wanted one, but never got the chance to ride one... now I've got a Kawi-Maico! Honestly, my Versys feels like a big open class motocross bike anyway, so the name fits for me.

I think it takes a sense of humor to rebadge the V, and it's paying off already. On Ventura Blvd today, a guy in a old Ford Contour pulled up to ask "What bike is that?" The light had changed, so I just smiled and rolled off. When he pulled up at the next red light, I pointed to the tank sticker. Blank expression. So I pointed to the Versys badge on the factory Givis. The guy blinked, still no idea. There was a lot of traffic noise on that part of Ventura, so I had to yell "It's a Kawasaki!"

That seemed to wake him up. But then he said, "Oh, it's a Maico..." and drove off. :)

Just bought mine last week and LOVE it! I don't want to trash the paint, but would like to get rid of the decals. What is the best method?
Use a heat gun, even a hair dryer might work. If using a heat gun be careful to keep the heat gun moving an not apply too much heat to one spot or you could potentially melt your fairing. Heat the decal and scrape off with your finger nails or plastic (not metal) scraper (soft enough it won't scratch the surface). After the decal has been removed use "Go Gone" or other adhesive remover to clean up the adhesive goo left behind. Heating first softens the adhesive and makes decal removal a LOT easier.

This. :)

Removed the "Versys" only underneath the "Kawasaki" this afternoon. Just used my fingernail (very gently with little pressure) and it came right off.

To remove the glue remaining, I sprayed a clean rag with WD-40, then soaked the glue by rubbing the rag over the glue.

Wait 30- 50 seconds, then with your fingernail covered with the rag soaked in WD-40, just gently rub the glue with the tip of your fingernail and it will come right off. It will form a small ball or lump on the rag as it comes off the bike.

My rag was an old white t-shirt.

My V was debadged when I got it. I never thought anything of it because I knew what it was, but now that I think back, Ive had a couple people ask me "what is that?" and I get alot of strange looks, like they are looking me over or something. I thought it was simply that the Versys looks different but now I think they are just trying to get a clue about what it is. I used to get alot of lookers on my KLR but that was because it stood out in a crowd being that it was a dirt bike on the street and it was 7' tall.

I wear a size 16. It makes the stock shifter nearly unusable.

You need to watch Rick Schmidt (former center for the Pacers) ride one of his vintage dirt bikes. He's a regular over at Casey.
