: ANNOUNCEMENT: Forum Clean Up Project

Hey folks! One of the reasons I volunteered to be a moderator is because there are a few to many posts that are in the wrong forum for my liking. For example, while arguments could be made that certain windscreens could give you a performance edge, windscreen posts really do belong in the Cosmetic section. So to that end you will probablly see a lot of messages that go missing. Just do a search, or look in the logical place. As a general policy on the forum we don't show re-directs on posts that are moved.

We also plan on changing the descriptions of the sub-categories so that its a little more clear where things go.

Thanks!

Keeping a forum clean and up-to-date is certainly a constant project. I'm just curious though, what's the problem with leaving re-directs?

They can be set to automatically expire no?

Yes they can be set to expire, I'm not really sure why that is the forum policy, but then again I have never moderated before, and my fellow moderators have indicated that it can create some real headaches, so I will deffer to their experience.

I have never considered windscreens to be cosmetic, and if you read the posts I think for every one that you see that says something about what they look like you will see 50 about how the PERFORM, so....Performance.

lonerockz
06-12-2009, 12:48 PM
Pegasus, when I read performance I read it as things affecting performance of the bike: speed & handling. Not performance of the component that is being affected: i.e. a more protective windscreen. In general I equate comfort with cosmetic, not performance. If you are advocating that windscreens are primarily installed to increase speed and handling... we will have to agree to disagree.

Arguments could be made that if your more comfortable you perform better, but to be honest it really doesn't matter which forum they are in, as long as all windscreen posts are in the same forum so that people can find them! I have requested that the specific components be described in the forum descriptions:

For "Technical Discussion" I'd like to change the description from "Topics related to Technical Issues" to "Topics related to Break/Fix and Troubleshooting."

For "Modifications - Performance" Change the description from "Discuss aftermarket and DIY performance modifications" to "Discuss performance related changes and products - Engine, Brakes, Suspension, Exhaust, etc."

For "Modifications - Cosmetic" Change the description from "Discuss aftermarket and Do-It-Yourself cosmetic modifications" to "Discuss cosmetic related changes and products - Lights, Seats, Luggage, Windscreens, Crash Bars, Electrical, Handle Bars, Grips, Paint, Plastic, etc."

What I can gather is it would be easier to navigate for answers to one's questions.

:thanx: to the Admin and you guys for efforts to clean up the mess and improve the forum.

Hats off to anybody that wants the thankless job of moderator and you do a fine job here. Not much bickering like a lot of sites. The one thing that i wouldn't mind is posts like about Camero or items not related at all to motorcycles eliminated. I do love cars and hunting all sorts of sports but after all this is a motorcyle forum. I know on my bowsites and such if something isn't directly related to the site it belongs somewhere else. Maybe others don't feel this way and is fine. I know it wasn't meant as anything big but it can get really sidetracted if there are not some guidelines. Just my 2 cents so see how others feel. That said i love this site and all the info and guys involved here and will enjoy whatever is on here. A lot of us really appreciate the ones that keep this going as it is more work than most realize or want to take on themselves.

That's why there's an off topic section here. We're well rounded individuals (& I'm not just talking physique) with other interests besides bikes & like to share those as well...

Sorry about that. My fault for not checking that it was in the off topic. Insert foot into mouth.

Thanks Bear. I saw it on new posts and never checked to see that it came from off topic. Always did need someone to keep me straight. Apoligize to anyone i offended. Was a senior moment. My story and i am sticking to it.

Don't worry about it! I always check "New Posts" too. And I don't think you were TOO offensive...

:D

I agree with you about this site & the bickering. One of the reasons I come here a lot. I believe it has a great deal to do with the age of most of our members. The Versys seems to attract very similar thinking & aged people. We may not always agree, but we're mature enough to not e-fight (how'd you like that modern terminology??) about it...

Speaking of cleanup. I look at the classified section often, and there are alot of items for sale that have already been sold but looking at the ad you can't tell until you read through the posts. I think it's safe to say there are pages of sold items that are still posted. I wonder if there is a way to put a time limit on (say 30 days?) on classified posts and maybe a request that you remove your ad after it has sold or at least a request to edit the header to say your item has sold. Just an idea.

I agree that all of the posts on a specific topic should all be in the same section of the forum. I can see how changing the descriptions would be appealing to some. I can also see how some of your suggested changes could confuse people because I would consider discussions about Lights, seats, luggage, windscreens, Crash Bars, and Handle Bars to be more functional in nature than cosmetic. I am a function over form kind of guy, and that's why cosmetic isn't the first thing that comes to mind when I think of these items. I'm in favor of short and straight to the point descriptors. Maintenance and Repair for "Technical Discussion". Drive Train and Suspension for "Modifications - Performance". Factory/After Market Accessories and DIY projects would cover most of "Modifications - Cosmetic". I think we don't even need the "Discuss" before the descriptions because the discussion is implied by the fact that in a forum topics are discussed.

Don't take me wrong I think what you are doing is great. If your suggested changes are implemented I'm smart enough to find what I'm looking for regardless of where the threads are listed and how the forums are described. And I'll post my new topics in the correct areas. I just want to show you a different perspective.

If anything I'd like to see a standard search box at the top of the page instead of it being hidden in a drop down menu. It was a couple of months before I realized I could search because it is not set up like most websites I frequent.

It would be nice to be able to delete a thread that I had started. Or at least actually change the title should I have sold something. It's should be the thread starters responcibility. If a thread has been started in the wrong area, the moderator should let that person know where the proper posting should be, then the wrong thread should be deleted or moved .

What - delete my thread I started? Go to http://www.kawasakiversys.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3190
I was lucky to do some changes, but the title is still there, you have to hold the mouse on the thread to see it's Sold. Page 5 about the center.
I hope I'm helping some-what. Let me know if I'm just a pain.

To edit your post/thread, simply hit the edit button. It'll bring up a text box to allow you to edit. To edit the title, if you look at the bottom of the text/edit box, you'll see a button called "go advanced" or something very similar. Click it. Then you can edit the title. I also know there is a way to delete your own post, but my "older than me" memory isn't recalling how right now, but I'm pretty sure it's a button on the bottom of the text/edit box...

Agreed. Thanks too all of the moderators for a great effort! I bought my V back at the beginning of July. First bike in over twenty years. The guy I bought from suggested I visit the forum here and I'm not sure what I'm enjoying more - the bike or the forum. I read the new posts almost every night. Lots of good mature discussion. Thanks everyone.

Someone apparently thinks the moderators haven't been doing enough lately. Is it just me, or does it seem like there are a lot more spammers lately?
Thanks guys for all you do, it just looks like someone wants to make it a full time job for you all.

Bear on a bicycle

Well, at the risk of sounding whiny, yes there has been a bit more spam lately. We're trying, but there are only 2 mods & 1 admin. We get it as soon as we're able, however we do have lives outside this forum, so it may take awhile. Our site was sold to a new owner a short time back, & they seem to have us on the back burner...

CrazyCarl

The spammers are an automated industry that gets paid by clicks hence their persistence. Best thing you can do is ignore them and "flag" a post as spam. That should bring it to the attention of and admin or mod.

From the preventive side of things, VBulletin (this forum software) does have some settings you can enable to help screen the new user registrations but even those have work arounds. You can do things like add special questions to the registration process but those are sometimes confisung and will deter new members from joining.

It's a complicated dilemma that, as usual, boils down to some good ol' fashioned personal TLC. In the meantime, the best thing members can do is don't click the spam links and report SPAM posts immediately. Use this image http://www.kawasakiversys.com/forums/cb/buttons/report.gif to report spam or other unwanted posts.

Should be no surprise, life isn't perfect.

I'm not sure where to post this so I will do it here. Many photos on my South America thread have been resized, a white band, a yellow triangle and a message has been attached to them, why? Are my images to large? What can I do to correct it? Is it temporary? It is not just my photos but many other photos on this site, a lot of us put some effort into our photography and these attachments have taken a lot away from our images.

Thanks,

Gary

Thanks guys for maintaining this wounderfull site. A good blend of people and good discussions. As for the images I have not missed any images that I have posted and the auto resizing work great.
You click on the bar above the image and you have full size picture-works for me.
Not sure which I enjoy most-The V or the forum.:D

Interesting, I was wondering if LoneRocks is still co-moderating, because Rick seems to be the man here. Great job Bear, we appreciate your work. I say we double your salary!

I am really looking forward to more great pics from Gary in the coming year. I did notice today his picture was small, only half screen and pushed to the left. The previous pictures that have
the "image resized" are great, nearly full screen and click to enlarge is instantaneous. I think it
is a great enhancement to the forum. IMHO

Footnote: I just discovered something looking at a photo. When you click resize to enlarge, don't forget to click it again to shrink before scrolling on, because the entire thread enlarges, and things
don't quite fit on a normal size monitor.

Don't quote me on this, but this seems like a new site upgrade. Wasn't too long ago, we had to resize our own photos. It helps when your photos are too big, so the text isn't pushed off the page, causing the reader to have to scroll to read your stories. I like it too, you can see the photos in all their glory, then click them & make them forum friendly again.

Moderators;
If you haven't noticed there is spam in the comments section on most of the new photos in the members galleries. I just wanted to make sure that you guys were aware of it, thanks for the great site.

Why don't we get rid of some of the sticky's as they are dated at best.
Might also dividing up the classifieds into three or four sections, ie; bikes, parts, gear, and misc sale items.
Just my two cents.

Seems as though he doesn't exist any more. I guess one of the other guys banned him or something. He's not showing up in the member list. If you happen to run across another of his posts, please hit the "report" button, top right corner of each post, little red & white triangle. That way I can see him directly & take a look at what he's doing.

Thanks!!

Another idea, sorry. A hero and zero section for reports on vendors and or individuals. As well an accessories section. For example there could be a tank bag thread where folks could put brand, pros, cons, where purchased, and price. Not a discussion thread just basic info. That would probably cut down on a lot of searching. That way if I were looking for pannier info I could enter the name in the search and the pannier thread would pop up and I could look through to see everyones pros and cons to the brand I was looking at.
Just thinking out loud,
