My rule of thumb on a new bike is MSRP out the door.

yeah... I got them down to $6200 for the bike, but when tax, freight, title, etc gets added I basically paid a tad over MSRP.

Same here, right at MSRP with the tax title and everything.

Man it sucks to have to bring in bikes!!

For the V here in South Africa I am currently looking at:
64,500.00 ZAR = 8,308.77 USD

But I have to wait a month, and let's say worse case scenario there is a 14% jump then I'm looking at:
73,530.00 ZAR = 9,469.34 USD :(:(

I'm hoping around 10% though, dealership guy told me a week ago they already started getting price increase notifications, and by the end of the year they expect bike prices to be up by around 25%.

Is that Tariffs, or shipping that is driving up the price?

Ey Paladin,

the old oil price and the exchange rate. Directly affects all our importing costs cause it affects the shipping, still cheaper than trying to bring it in yourself though. At least if someone like Kawa SA brings them in they get it through customs easier with less import tax plonked on than if you'd bring it in yourself I suppose.

And with the Rand (ZAR) currently in a bit of a slump (about 1 USD = 7.76 ZAR) and our treasurer speaking of a possible 2% interest rate hike to force (read scare) people to stop making debt, things aren't looking good for happy financial times at the moment.

But with that said, I'm sure the dealerships could keep the prices down a bit better , but hey, if you do a country wide price increase and blame it on external factors your buyers don't really have many options. Still have to see a company that understands they will sell more if they have a better price, sell 4 at Rx, instead of 1 at R2x, they all to greedy. And the SA bike market is booming suddenly because the oil price is making the petrol and diesel so expensive...whoa I'm about to rant, so let me stop right there :), I'm a programmer not a financial analyst :p

ok well, I'm off home now, you all have a great day :thumb:

My buddy knew the owner and she basically said she didn't make any money off of me. So, I wouldn't expect that you'll be getting a much better deal than that without some kind of factory incentive.

Only if I manage to fall into their cage at the zoo! That actually is quite funny, a few years ago I was in a chat room speaking to someone from the US who insisted that there must be lions and giraffe and stuff that sometimes disrupt our airports here. No matter how I tried explaining that you only get those animals in nature reserves or zoos,he just wouldn't believe me, eventually I gave up and told him his right, we all fence off our yards so the rhino's stay out of our vegetable patches :D. Now I realize that when most people not from South Africa speak of "Africa" they see the untamed wild in their minds eye... but to get to the nearest nature reserve where I can experience that is quite a few hours drive away from Cape Town.

I paid $9200 CDN out the door for my Versys and that included the luggage, full rack, and Vario Windshield. Even though the Canadian dollar is stronger than the US dollar - our 'Canadian Special Pricing' doesn't quite reflect this new position of the dollar.

I may have saved a few dollars buying it in the US but then I'd have to go through the importation hassle and then trying to find a dealer to service a US Spec bike. Also, I like to give the local guy the business - because when I need them, I need them to still be there and not out of business.

This is a sore point for me. None of the metro-Atlanta dealers would bargain much less allow me to test ride a Versys. I walked into my nearby shop with cash and a fair price in mind, but the dude obviously had better things to do than sell bikes. Maybe play Tetris. I know it is a new age, but how do dealers sell bikes nowadays? When I asked the tattooed youth (yes, I have one but it is tastefully hidden) at the local shop how I could get a quick ride on a Versys, he replied that I need to make friends with someone who owns one. Funny. Hah. I am soo laughing.

Yesterday I drove out to Street and Trail Motorsports just outside Augusta, GA. The friendly sales rep let me ride the bike a bit and then I bought it. They seem unable to sell anything other than dirtbikes, cruisers, and Hayabusas out there, so I got the Versys very cheap, as in $6300 not including state tax. Easy. It was worth my morning and $80 in gas. If I bought a Versys locally, I would have paid at least $7200 plus tax. Yeah, all the dealers throw a $250-300 "freight" or "setup" charge in there. I prefer to support local bike shops and want them to make a profit, but cripes, $300 on top of list price? Methinks not. I was prepared to pay list price for a Versys, no more. I'd think the dealers could eat a smidgen of profit in order to move a unit.

Sorry about the rant. I am super stoked about my Versys :) but less-than-thrilled about most bike shops right now. I thought that maybe things had changed with dealers' attitudes, but obviously I was wrong as far as this area is concerned. Funny how the best service always seems to come from European bike shops.

Not so true - it just depends on what you got going on in your area. I gave up my beloved BMW F650Cs because I could no longer deal with the BMW service in my area. I had about three options in somewhat reasonable proximaty to my location and the closest being about 50 kilometers away (35 miles). They abused me like a rented mule. I'll never touch another BMW product again based on the service they delivered and the prices they charged.

I'm so much happier dealing with my local Kawasaki dealer - these people are great and they now how to treat people like human beings and not cash cows waiting in line to be milked. And the best parts, they are just up the road.

You'll have more service options in Atlanta than you would with a European product - which means you can try different places until you are satisfied with the shop you choose to deal with.

But, I do agree with you - many motorcycles shops are a mess and the sales/service is less than desirable. It takes either luck to have a decent shop nearby or you have to hunt around until you do.

Feel free to vent - it's your right and that's what forums are about! :)

I visited the dealers around western NY and the best price I found was 6150 plus 300 dealer prep fee plus tax. I watched ebay for a couple of weeks and ended up getting one there from Albany NY for 5800 no prep fee plus tax. It cost me 180 in gas to pick it up. so I felt it was a great deal. So if you are not in too much of a hurry you could do watch ebay and maybe get lucky. By the way I love the bike.

I wanted to have my bike (my old GS250 Suzuki) fixed, so I called Southside Honda in Dayton to have it serviced. They told me they wouldn't even mess with it, they didn't feel like it, but they said maybe they could get to it by October! Needless to say I was a little upset. I then called Vista Kawasaki, and they were great and worked on my bike after I told them about my experience with Southside.

Then I decided that I was going to purchase a new bike, and I was torn between the V-Strom and the Versys. I went to Southside to look at bikes and the sales guy was very friendly and helpful. I eventually decided on the Verysys and I love my choice. The dealer is awesome! A few days after my new purchase I saw this video on the news. http://www.whiotv.com/video/16398009/index.html

It's about Southside and a nasty message they left to customers on Memorial Day. After seeing this, I'm sure I made the right choice.

I won mine last nite on eBay, $6,179 plus a $99 document and processing fee. No dealer prep fees or any other BS. The dealer is located in Talladega, AL and I'm in Atlanta, GA. He's even going to deliver it to my front door tomorrow around lunch time ready to go with a full tank of gas for an additional $174. That's way cheaper than me buying a hitch mount bike carrier, filling up the Land Rover and driving 232 miles round trip to pick it up. I've never had a more expensive or smoother eBay transaction than this. I highly recommend Talladega Cycle Sales if you are still looking and live in the metro Atlanta area. I tried to buy from a local dealer but I only found one dealer that one and he had just the one. It was Metro Cycles on Thornton Road, I told him I was ready to buy, had cash in hand and what would be the best he could do and he proceeded to quote me MSRP plus all the normal dealer prep, taxes, and other fees which came out to over $7,800. I asked him again if that was the best he could so he went to talk to his sales manager and came back and told me that they would waive the $250 dealer prep if I would agree to buy it at that exact moment. I politely refused and that was that. Now I feel like a kid at Christmas time. <grin> Can't wait until tomorrow.

Ah yes, I went to the same dealership to look at a V-Strom and ended up falling in love with the Versys. And no, they would not let me test ride either bike, but I was told that if I bought one and did not like it after 5-7 miles, I could return it.

I honestly do not comprehend how most multi-brand dealerships sell bikes. When I explain this sort of thing to non-bikers, they become incredulous. Just doesn't make sense.

Got my Versys back from its 600mi service from the other local dealer where the Gen-Y salesdude told me the I needed "to become friends with someone who owns [a Versys]" if I wanted to try it out. That same salesdude saw me loading my Versys in the truck to go home. No reaction. Appears that they sold the one that languished for a few months. Meh. I got what I wanted.

It was me, guilty as charged. I figured if I didn't get that one it would be awhile before another one was available in this area. I was concerned that in a few months the 2009 models would start rolling out and I may not like the color as much as I do the current red one.

I took my Versys to Atlanta Motor Sport in Roswell. I took it there mainly because it is up the street from me, but I must give their service department props. Unlike the rest of the dealership, the service department is very professional and courteous. They charge $80 per hour for labor, so my bill totaled just under $200. Yes, they are expen$ive, but I feel confident that they did a good job. I will do most of my own service from here on, but at least official Kwack technicians did the first one.

I'm coming home over Xmas, picking up my 2009, and shipping it down for only an extra $800 over total USD price! I can never register or sell it locally in this country, and have to take it out of the country twice a year on a short road trip which I would do anyway, but well worth it!!!!

After my local dealer told me 6899 plus 600 setup and 199 for "filing paperwork", I found a place in Trinidad, CO called Valcom Motorsports. Just to give you an idea, dealer cost is just about 6000, they need to pay someone to set it up, finance people to do paper work and usually a freight charge. Plus they have to make a little money.

If you find one less than msrp out the door the dealer probably isn't making hardly anything and just hoping for future business from you.

I gave the dealer $5995 for the V and a helmet. Paid my rich Uncle Sam another ~500 or so in taxes.

A good ice breaker would always be to offer $0 (zero) for the bike, then when the dealer says they are asking $XXXX, you can easily say "OK - I'll meet you half way" Then through any additional negotiations, point out that you have already come up thousands of dollars from what you wanted to pay.

Kind of comical, but the point is you can always raise your price a bit, but if you and the dealer agree to a price, it's hard to suddenly bargain down.

I got mine at FastTrax Sully IA. A friend of mine bought one at the same time. They were the only 2 on the floor but it is a very small dealership. The guy that owns the shop is the one and only salesman and he and his son do all the maintenance work, wer'e talkin tiny but very personable. For instance when I did my first oil change I went to his shop to buy a few filters and he let me do the oil change in his parking lot, get this, he supplied the tools at no charge and seemed happy to do so. Most dealers would have laughed at me and offered to do it for their normal labor rates. I guess since we bought 2 of them at once he cut us a break $6400.00 OTD of course there was state tax and license fees but no set up, no freight, no nothing just $6400.00

I'm in the metro DC-Baltimore area and have been looking for a Versys for a few weeks. Finally found a dealer in the area with one in stock, but the best price he would give me is $7600 out the door. All the other dealers said they wouldn't be able to get their hands on an '08...high gas prices plus low entry price on this bike is generating a lot of interest in the Versys.

I understand. In certain parts of country (NW) Versys is very popular. While MOTY is nice it hurts those who have not bought yet although it reaffirms your making a good choice. I will tell you this bike is far from perfect but it's close and a great all arounder. Buy stock bike for lowest price you can then add your goodies.Good luck with your search.

I negotiated $6100 and dealer fees of $349, which I was told was not negotiable.. but when I looked at the final paperwork they showed the sale price as $6325 and dealer fees as $124.Some game the dealerships plays. I knew I was at $6449, so whatever they skewed it to doesn't really matter. After PA taxes I'm at almost $7k. But I wanted it and am as happy with it as I've ever been with any of my previous bikes. Is that the out the door price and if so, which dealer is it? The best I've been able to do is $7,000.00 out the door.

Yes that is OTD, Plano Suzuki. Ask for Jason.

I know this thread is old but for anyone looking to buy an 09 might be interested in what I paid.

Without IL sales tax or $103 license fee my faster because it's green 2009 "V" came to $6727 at BBK motorsports. With tax and license the out-the-door price was $7301.

I considered a lot of dealers and finally took the deal from a dealer 2 miles from my home. He wasn't the cheapest up front but after all things were considered he will meet my needs.

My green 2009 out he door no other fees $6955.
included in the deal is the $150 first service. 15% off accessories for life.
Tire changing for $12 a tire for all bikes in my garage. (this is going to be very handy before track days, I'll be able to put the pilot powers on and off cheaply) I can buy the tires at his 15% discount or shop online and get best price no problem.

he is a new dealer for Kawasaki, this is his first season. He has been a Victory dealer since the start. He has always allowed me test rides and has a kick ass open house twice a year.

Just put down a deposit on an 09 Green, today. $6900 OTD... I think I got a good deal? Seems they are at that 7K mark. I was dealing on an 08, but could only get them to $6400 OTD.

Those are both good #'s! $6400 OTD on an 08 here in texas is pretty much the dealer cutting profit to the bone...$6900 on an 09 is not bad at all as invoice rose for 09. BTW, I work @ a stealership..I know these things ;)

I got screwed on the price. The only satisfaction is I love the Versys. Of all the bikes I have had (Hondas, Harleys, Bmws. this is the best of all for half the price. Enjoy.
