: There and Almost Back Again
potus2012 04-19-2009, 06:39 PM 2 months, 30 states, 12,000 miles. That was the plan anyway.
My story is posted a day at a time on my wife's blog site. New posts go up every Sunday. This week she posted two days.
Note: this trip last summer was pre-Versys so feel free to disparage me on this site.
Feel free to leave comments on the blog site too; I crave the feedback. (positive or negative)
Blog site is in my signature.
montanaversys 04-19-2009, 07:58 PM Great blog and pics. Can't wait to hear how your trip through Montana was. Great work!
potus2012 04-19-2009, 08:03 PM Thanks.
I'm just writing the Montana part now. Should be up in a week or two. We inexplicably missed what is probably the best road in the state. I apparently didn't do my homework very well. This, of course, means we will have to go back to Montana at some point.
montanaversys 04-19-2009, 08:09 PM Well, you got to Glacier, so you had to hit Going to the Sun. What did you miss? Either way, c'mon back! My wife and I would be glad to put you two up in Missoula, I'll even take you on one of my favorite little trips down Hwy 12 into Idaho to some natural hot springs!
potus2012 04-20-2009, 12:48 PM We did hit Going to the Sun, but missed 212 between Red Lodge and Silver Gate. Didn't even know that was there until I saw it on the scary rides thread here. Quick check of the map shows a VERY twisty road, don't know how I missed it when I was picking routes.
It'll probably be a few years before we get back up there, but I may take you up on your offer when we do.
montanaversys 04-20-2009, 02:04 PM Heck, I've been in MT for 4 years now and haven't heard about it. Will check that one out as soon as I can.
potus2012 04-27-2009, 09:48 PM Gratuitous self interest posting continued....
Next day is up, still not to Montana yet (cheap suspense!)
potus2012 05-03-2009, 06:01 PM Next two days posted; we're in Montana now.
montanaversys 05-04-2009, 11:09 AM Woohoo!!
potus2012 05-31-2009, 10:26 PM Now posted to Sturgis. Anyone other than Montanaversys reading it?
CDBonnett 06-01-2009, 11:51 AM I'm reading now, Been off line.
Chuck Bonnett in Billings, MT.
You missed a great ride on Hwy 212.
:sorry:
its my favorite ride for lunch.
potus2012 06-01-2009, 12:42 PM Yeah, I kind of figured that. I still don't know how I managed to miss it. I was kind of hoping someone would post how it is a terrible unpaved gravel road with washed out sections and frequent closures by resting goat herds, but no such luck. I blew it. :censored: Definitely have to fix that at some point in the future.
Thanks for reading, how do you like it?
CDBonnett 06-01-2009, 01:38 PM Well paved and fast loop.
Red Lodge MT Hwy 212 to Cooke City.
Then Return to Wyoming Hwy 296 “Sun Light Basin” or “Chief Joseph Dead Indian Hill” to Wyo 120 North to MT Hwy 72 into Belfry Hwy 308 then back into Red Lodge.
About 160 miles ~ 3 hours on a good day. Minus lunch time in Cooke City.
Some 15 MPH corners you can take @ ~ 45 and some at 15 who knows why but be ready to brake for slow cars.
Open Memorial day to Labor day then showed shut. This year there is still 20 foot snow banks for ~ 30 miles COOL!!!
Good luck and have fun on your trip.
:goodluck:
potus2012 06-07-2009, 09:33 PM This trip was last summer. The luck eventually ran out, but I've still got quite a bit of writing to do before I get to that.
Next day posted, still in the Black Hills.
I'm heading for NW Arkansas Tuesday. Will probably hit at least part of the Talimena Byway in OK. Anybody ridden there recently?
potus2012 07-07-2009, 01:10 PM Next few days posted, now in Michigan.
Anybody outside the state of Montana reading this or looking at the pictures???
potus2012 02-01-2010, 08:48 PM Hate to revive an old post that generated little interest, but in the off chance someone here was reading I am pleased to announce I have finally gotten around to finishing the blog.
Jungmann1 02-01-2010, 11:36 PM Way to stick to it!
