Although a gear indicator is now third on my long-term Versys "wish list" (after a winter-worthy windshield and a rear hugger), I know it will take me longer to figure out which one - if any - to buy. I don't absolutely have to have one, since I'm not using my Versys for track days and I don't ride hard enough through corners on public roads to need to worry about hitting the perfect apex and hammering the throttle on the exit! However, my age-related conditon - which Peter Egan has correctly labeled as being "pre-senile" - often leaves me clueless as to which gear I happen to be using at any given moment. Oh, the shame of trying to toe-up from 6th to 7th . . . or stomp down from 1st to 1/2th!!! :o

I would like to keep the cost down as much as possible - and to find one that is easy to install. Any suggestions?

Elllvis: You have just asked on of my burning questions::D I do not have a motorcyle yet (taking the course on 6/13) and I will be getting a Versys right after that. I have always been wondering how I would be able to keep track of which gear I'm in. It's easy with a manual car. If some one tells you about a gear indicator please pass it on to me too;)

Acumen digi gear indicator,!!! seems to be easy to fit details can be found on www.busters-accessories.co.uk they cost us$ 120 thats approx, I dont know if they ship to the states but it may be worth a look.

I have the Gipro thats the has the green color to match the bike. I like it although it is almost impossible to see in the daylight. I used to look at it alot when I first got the Versys, but now I rarely pay attention to it.

I use the gipro. its OK but at many stoplights it still reads 2nd gear or higher depending on how quickly you stop & if you touch any gears on the way down...let the clutch out a little & it finds itself, but it doesnt keep up like you would think...its OK for function... Good for looks, easy to wire, plugged right into the harness.

I use the "2" method. (I went up one tooth on the front sprocket). In top gear if I'm say going 60 MPH my tach should read 4000 RPM. If its 5000 RPM, I'm in 5th gear. 6000 RPM @ 60 MPH is 4th gear. etc.etc. To check if you're in top gear, look at your speed and your RPM should be lower by 2. (75 MPH is 5500 RPM and so on). Easy.:huh:

+1 on blipco's solution. At first I was hunting for 7th, now I look at the tach and speedo and I know on the high gears. I don't care so much on low gears...it's more sound and feel and tach. I'd put the money into a loud horn instead!

I use a variation of blipco's method. In fourth gear the rpm and speed match up: 4000rpm and 40mph; 5000 and 50; 6000 and 60. In fifth gear, you get another 10mph at each rpm; in sixth gear, an additional 10 mph. This is not exact science, but it's close enough to work for me.
