: Helmet Opinions
Gatorman 10-02-2008, 02:45 PM My local dealer is having a sale and I've narrowed my new helmet choices down to three options. Just looking for opinions on which is the best helmet for the price.
Shark RSI - on sale for $249.
Shoei RF1000 - on sale for $314.
Gmax GS68 - on sale for $119.

These guys have my favorite helmet on sale-no shipping or sales tax last I checked.
Nolan N102 flip. They also have the new N103 flip, similar, except that the sunshield is inside the helmet.

Bear on a bicycle 10-02-2008, 03:14 PM Thats not a bad price for the Shoei. But bottom line, which fits you best?
Gatorman 10-02-2008, 03:53 PM All three fit very well. I wore each helmet for several minutes. I like the design of the Shark, but since I don't know the brand I'm uncertain of the quality.
versysred 10-02-2008, 05:33 PM Shoei RF-1000 hands down I have the same helmet and I love it very nice comfortable light and very easy to change to a tinted windshield. There quality is unmatched IMO.
furley 10-02-2008, 08:59 PM which ever one is the tightest but most comfortable. shark is a fairly good quality helmet. which ever fits the best.

miguelito 10-02-2008, 11:19 PM I have Shoei RF-1000 and like it. The Shark is supposed to be good. I would wear the helmet for about 20-30 minutes around their showroom. Sometimes it takes that long for 'hot spots' to be noticeable.
Red Alert 10-03-2008, 01:57 PM Bear in mind that Shoei has a long history of quality helmets. Also, they sell replacement liner components. I was able to custom fit my Shoei with these parts to make it more comfortable and a better fit. For the record, I've never bought a helmet that wasn't a Shoei.

versysred 10-03-2008, 01:59 PM I forgot to mention that my father also has a rf-1000 and he loves his just as much as I do mine.
Arnott_exZX7 10-03-2008, 05:30 PM HI there from canada! Luckily my son has a job with a Can-Am dealership (parts) and he got me a Zox Spectra R in flat colours for $120 cdn. It's dot & snell 2005 approved and fits good, plenty of vents, removable liner, good visor. Check their website!
fasteddiecopeman 10-08-2008, 11:50 AM Just re-read the "Motorcyclist" article on helmets:
suggest the #1 rated one, the Z1R ZRP-1. WAY cheaper, too!!!:thumb:

You wont go wrong with the shark ( if the fit suits you ) the RS1 is a great helmet its constructed from Carbon / Kevlar composite, ( light weight and very strong ) it comes with with anti scratch / anti fog treated visor, plus Sharks push one system for quick release visor removal, two shell sizes for a better fit, and fully removable liner ( for ease of cleaning ) Shark is a major supplier in Europe and well respected over this side of the pond,, motorgp rider Randy DePuniet uses the shark ( well it is made in France ) But helmets are really a matter of personal choice,, hope you enjoy what"ever you buy,,,,,

Gatorman 10-08-2008, 04:30 PM I bought the Shark RSI yesterday. It simply felt better on my noggin. Although I haven't worn it much, here are my observations. Very light, very durable, red to match the V, comfortable but tight (hard to slide on glasses), light fogging at stops that disappeared when moving or by lifting shield. All in all I'm happy. Thanks for all the input.
i wanted the joe rocket carbon fiber but it didnt fit my head, tried the shoei, bad fit,, i ended up buying the scorpioin for $199,, not really what i wanted but it fit my head the best.
Bear on a bicycle 10-28-2008, 07:55 PM That carbon fiber sure is light, aint it!
StonedGP 11-07-2008, 07:01 AM Does anyone know which brand/models are for oval shaped heads? I have an HJC Sy-Max that fits great. But, I want a bit better flip-up helmet. A quieter helmet, preferably with an integrated flip-up dark sun shade (ie...Sys-max 2).
Machog 11-07-2008, 11:10 AM which brand/models are for oval shaped heads?
Might want to try the Nolan N102 or N103, both flip & have a built in sunshade. I have an oval head (couldn't wear a Shoei) and I find the Nolan very comfortable. Plus I like the chin catch (not a D ring), its the only helmet I buy now.

Got mine here, best price I could find, plus no shipping or tax.

scooter650 11-08-2008, 10:08 AM Not to rain on your parade but I had a shark RSF and after a couple of seasons the vinyl on the neck roll hardened and cracked and I stopped wearing it because it was scratching my face and neck (sometimes drawing blood) when putting it on and taking it off. Maybe the quality is better now but that's my two bits...ie: any thing that may touch skin should be cloth only............BTW I wear an arai now and only fiberglass construction, nothing made of plastic protects my melon adequately IMO.

...I like the flip-ups too!
Dorian 11-09-2008, 04:44 AM I have the HJC Sy-Max II and am very happy with the fit and comfort. The internal sun shade is a nice touch but I wish it was a little darker. This is my first helmet so I can't compare how quiet it is to others on the market but it oddly seems to have more wind noise with the visor down then with it up. As for the weight, again I can't really compare since I haven't worn any other helmets. The overall fit and finish seems really good.

MHansen105 11-11-2008, 05:37 PM Akuma
Bear on a bicycle 11-11-2008, 05:41 PM Do you have one?
http://www.akumahelmets.com/products.html
MHansen105 11-12-2008, 06:35 PM Bear,
I do have the Akuma. I love it, but it is the only helmet I've owned, so I can't really compare and contrast to others.
The fit is good for me, and the built in lights make my wife happy!
Helmets are a very personal choice, but it is one area that I will never skimp, or look for a real bargin...after all, how much is your head worth?!

Bear on a bicycle 11-12-2008, 07:44 PM Which one did you get? I heard a rumor that they're making a flip-up. I hope so.
MHansen105 11-13-2008, 07:00 PM Bear,
I don't know about a flip-up version of any Akuma helmet, but I prefer a solid chin piece anyway.
I've got the R2-Specter in Matte Black. If they had had the USAF Stealth version in stock in my size I'd probably be wearing that.
Since you taught me to upload images, here is one of the helmet.

I added som of the 3M magic reflective tape. It is shiny black under normal light, but glows white under artificial light at night. I like this stuff so much I put it on the back of my mirrors to help me show up in cager's headlights!
Bear on a bicycle 11-13-2008, 07:52 PM I like the R2 as well as the USAF helmet. Of course, I prefer the shape of the USAF but would like it in matte black...
I know, picky people...
