I googled the top 1000 classic rock songs and worked off that list to build my MP3 collection. Then I found a list of the top 250 songs of the 80s and picked a few that I listened to on college radio back then. Then I picked songs that meant something to me. Ended up with about 15 Gbs of songs. I play in shuffle mode and am surprised from time to time with a song I didn't remember downloading.
