Greetings all!

The day I picked up my V the service guy told me the stock chain was junk and recommended I replace it with an RK or something similar. I just scheduled my first service (different dealer) and asked them their opinion. This guy seems to be fine with the stock chain.

So, I come to this knowledge 'Treasure Trove' to ask my fellow Versys brothers and sisters (don't want to leave anyone out) what your take is on this issue.

I have over 10k miles on my chain and haven't had to even adjust it yet, other than to put a 16tooth sprocket on the front. I could easily get another 10k out of the stock chain.

I know of other V riders around the 20k mark for their chains.

Keep it well lubed with your favorite lube Mine is DuPont Teflon Multi-Use dry wax (tx Gustavo). I put it on every 300 to 500 miles.

Man who told you that is an idiot, I would ignore anything else he suggests and go to another dealer as you have.

Do not go back to that service center. That guy is a dumbass, and probably not a good mechanic either.

You should easily get 15,000-20,000 miles out of the stock chain if you keep it clean, lubed and adjusted properly.

Yep, I hadn't planned on having this dealer take care of the bike anyway. They're a bit too far from home. The guy I spoke to today locally seemed fairly knowledgeable, so I'll give 'em a try. Thanks, mudarra! :thumb:

+1 to what mudarra said. There is no reason the stock chain won't last 25+ k with the proper maintenance. Cleaned , lubed & aligned. As a note, some of the new invisible chain lube from BEL-Ray & others is awesome! It's not like the messy Castrol chain lube & others like it!! Try it, when there's no mess to clean up, you will do more regular maintenance:thumb:

Chains and sprockets can last a long time with proper care. My last bike was a zx-7 with 115 horse at the rear wheel and the chain-sprockets went 60,000 kms before they needed replaceing. MY licence bracket said "Life begins at 280 k", that will give you an idea that I didn't baby my machine. Love the V even if the power isn't the same, great commuter( 90 kms. round trip)!

Fit a Scottoiler and forget it. Fit the large flexi reservoir under the seat. I have just done a 3600 mile trip and there is at least another 500 miles of lubing left.
The chain is very slack after my trip and needs adjusting now.

FWIW Guys: I use WD40 on my KLR's chain, ONLY WD40!!!, and I have 48,000 kms on the original chain!:thumb:

I use WD40 liberally and nothing else on all my bikes. My chains last as long or longer than anyone with the same bike, and as an added bonus... it doesn't need cleaning!

What?? Cleaning is all your doing with WD40!

That's not a bad thing, new chains last a long time and are internally lubed at the factory.

Too much chain goop and you will shorten the life of your chain, especially if you ride on the dirt.

Besides cleaning your chain with the WD40, you are ALSO lubing the interface between the side-plates and the O-rings so they don't tear which would release the factory chain lube! Sure works for ME!!!:yeahsmile:

Keeping your chain clean is all good but WD is not much of a lubricant. It was developed a long time ago by our military as its name say.... Water Displacing. To keep bombs and equipment from corrosion. Putting some slick 50 or similar in a sqweeze bottle and applying that to your chain AFTER a ride when the chain is warm will work mo better.

The chain is internally lubed. The only reason for lubing the outside is to protect it from corrosion. What better way to do that than with water-displacing oil?

WD has many uses and an oil is not one of them. I use it to clean my hands/bike from grease and oil.
