Thanks. The Suzuki GS750E is the pride of my collection. I bought it about three years ago from the second owner. It had 811 miles on it. I cleaned it up, changed the tires, had the brakes rebuilt, installed Progressive Suspension fork springs, and did a few other minor things. I drive it on clear, sunny days, and it now has about 2800 miles on it.

Speaking of old Hondas, you reminded me of one I forgot to post a picture of. I restored a '73 Honda CL450 about four years ago, and rode it for a couple of seasons before I foolishly sold it. It was a great bike, like a lot of those old Hondas. You oughta fix yours up and add them to your active rotation.

Believe it or not, that Honda parallel twin is the reason I'm riding the Versys today. I bought that bike and fell in love with the torque and instant response of the engine. I remember saying to myself that as soon as a manufacturer came out with a modern, liquid-cooled twin with a really good suspension and a cool modern look, I'd buy it. :D

PS The Alaska trip covered 9700 kms (6000+ miles) in 19 days, and we did it again on my KLR and his Ural in '06.

05 KLR 650, excellent machine.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii30/Macvalk/2bb4a4b0.jpg

97 Honda Valkyrie, great touring bike with a huge flaw-you could only get around 100miles out of a tank-worse when loaded or with headwinds.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii30/Macvalk/CIMG0229.jpg

04 Honda ST1300 ABS, hated it. Had a design flaw causing it to wobble and weave in wind, specially when overtaking trucks. Not all of them do it, but mine did and I couldn't cure it. Plus, mine happend to have magnetic tires and I got 3 flats in the 10 months I owned it.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii30/Macvalk/IMG_1684.jpg

94 HD FXDL, great bike, but its flaw was breaking down. I went through 3 voltage regulators in 2 years, each time when it failed I was left stranded. It also had a porous float that caused it to leak gas on the red hot exhaust when parked. Everything was covered under warranty, but still a PITA.

88 Virago 1100, a real rocket, early attempt by Japanese to copy a US cruiser, good effort.

Various other machines, but nothing of consequence.

thanks :) I have googled over one of these for a few years , When i bought my other guzzi there was a brand spanking new one in the showroom , but it was a few more dollars than i could spend at the time so you know how it goes ...... all i could do was drool on the tank as i passed by. So when i came across this bad boy online this fall i just couldn't let it go , so i didn't :thumb: I Got a guzzi green tank for it so it may just turn green for spring

I had a friend with a Green V11 Sport/Red Frame with the Mistral Pipes, I loved when we'd go out and ride, I'd always let him get in front because the sound of the bike was pure sex.

Congrats again, I'm jealous. My father has an '03 LeMans but it's out of commission right now with some sort of oil leak. I may have to go over and check it out so I can take it for a ride.

Thanks, It's a beautiful color scheme especially in person. I remember my father walking around the corner of the Guzzi booth at the 2002 Motorcycle show in Long Beach and all I see is his jaw drop and him go "Oh, Damn". That was the moment he fell in love and bought the first one the dealer got in. He uncrated and assembled it himself.

1983 Honda Interceptor 750, my first bike on the road. She was given to me by a bud a couple of years ago in trade for some beer. He had just bought a new Ninja and his wife wanted some garage space. It took a little work to get it going as he stored the bike without fuel stabilizer and a full tank for about 5 years.

This was the bike I learned to ride on (yes I'm a late starter) and even took all of my test's on her. I was side swiped by an SUV on her as well the night before my road test.

Now, in the tradition of "paying it foward", I've given it to another friend for him to kick around. Lot's of good times fixing it up and making it my own.

Cheers.

Hi, this is my first post to this group so I'm not too sure what I am doing. Wanted to 'insert' a picture but it asks me for a URL rather than a file on my hard drive so I am now going to try to 'attach' a photo but not sure how that will work. Yeah, its the 'hooked up' part that pushed me to street riding. I had a DRZ for a couple of years, bought it new in '05. What a great bike for it's intended purpose! I really wanted to get back into dirt riding/dual sporting, after not owning a bike for a number of years. Turns out, most of the dirt riding here is either private property behind a fence, or short little alley ways connecting neighborhoods. I found myself riding on the street most of the time, so I sold the DRZ & bought the Versys. I used to love riding MX when I was younger, but not so much any more. I love riding in the dirt, but I really don't want it to be a chore, hence the dual sport bikes.

I have a friend who rides at Zars & is a member of DBSA (at least he was, not sure if he still is). We rode out there a couple of times. Nice place, but I'm not crazy about the fees, or belonging to a club for that matter. So for now, I'm a dirt biker on the street, and actually enjoying the ride...

Zars is the ranch, of course, and DBSA is the club (http://www.clubdbsa.org). I'm a bit more than a member though...actually VP of the club. It is true that offroad riding in Texas requires riding on private land, but the huge upside to that is that WE make the rules and aren't beholden to the whims of competing interests and/or limp-wristed tree huggers.

There are other places to ride also, one of which I'm helping to develop, up near Marble Falls. It's about 3000 acres of beautiful and rugged Hill Country. Still another local option is in the works, so the future is very bright for offroad riding in South Texas.

As for DBSA fees, that's for the individual to decide what is fair. For an individual member though, the cost works out to less than $20 per month. I'm a reformed golfer;), and a single Saturday afternoon stroll on the links runs way more than a month of 24/7 access to some primo trails. Heck, it'll take you $20 just to go to a movie and buy a drink and a snack.

Not trying to sell anyone...just offering my perspective on cost, especially since comments/questions about fees usually come to me first. Also, DBSA is a not-for-profit organization, and our reserves each year are set aside for future land purchase or long term lease. Part of THAT goal is to provide an even lower cost access to offroad riding.

Anyway, if you get the itch, give me a shout. I'll let you ride as my guest, since you now know someone who can "hook you up.";)

Oh yeah, as for dual sport riding, I hang out with a slightly overlapping group of dual sport guys. Our 'club' name is S.T.U.D.S., which stands for South Texas United Dual Sports. Last year 4 of us rode the TransAm trail from Colorado to Oregon, and the flew home with the bikes shipped behind us. We always have guys doing different rides, including the TAT, Mexico, etc. If you're free for breakfast on Friday mornings (6am till whenever you have to go,) we meet most weeks, and always at the Thousand Oaks Cafe on Austin Hwy, just a few blocks southwest of Harry Wurzbach.

I ride my Versys there, so true dual sports aren't required.

Well I am not usually the brand-loyal type but I had good experiences with my kawasakis and more importantly the kawasaki dealership where I grew up in Ottawa, Ontario. Now I live in Texas and don't really have preference for any of the dealerships here. I do all my own work and buy most of my parts and accessories online (like they would even stock anything for any of my other bikes). I did once own a 1980 Can-Am MX-6 125 for a short time before i bought my first KX. That KX and the Versys are the only brand new vehicles I ever owned.
I can't do motocross tracks anymore but still love trail riding, just never seem to get the chance the past couple years. That's why I started street bikes a few years ago.
Thanks for the welcome. I joined a few forums when I bought the Versys back in June but haven't really posted anything until now.

Cheers, John

That's ok. I'm 50 now, but the truth is that I couldn't ride MX tracks even when I was riding MX tracks. Age, wisdom, and the size of jumps on modern tracks have conspired to prevent me from even trying anymore.

Besides, I really like rocks, trees, etc.

When I was in my 20's I always wanted to do MX tracks but there were very few of them around and my riding buddies had dual purpose or trail bikes so I rarely got a chance. We mostly rode in abandoned sand pits and we had lots of beautiful trails.
When I moved to Texas in my early 30's I bought the newer KX and went to a local track with a couple friends of mine. This is where I realized that I such on a MX track. It was excactly like you just described: modern, do-or-die doubles or triples just don't appeal to my sense of self preservation. Not to mention a track made out of north texas clay (read concrete) and 100 plus degree weather quickly wore me down.
There are a few decent places to go trail riding here but i still need to plan a day of it and drive all the way up to the OK border (Red River). its just a lot easier to get on the Versys and go for a quick ride anytime I like. i wonder if it would be too crazy to try some easy trails on the V?

Currently I have just the ZX14, Versys, and the Zuma, 2 1/2 bikes is not enough, just need to get my wife to see my point of view. I miss the Futura most off all.

Real bikes don't have cams and valves! 1975 RD350, in process of becoming track/street bike. Bought from original owner (!) with 13k miles. I raced an R back in the day and had a "mid-life" hankering for a return to a 2 stroke. Love it!

Sorry to bring up a old thread but why start a new one just for vanity pictures. ;-)

Aabout to put away for the winter my toy and thought I'd take some pics while the sun was still out up here. 81 KZ1000 Police Special, last of the big kick starts. Hey at least it's a Kawi.

Showed up like this:

Then turned to this:

Very nice ride sir and thank you. Hope to get one when they're old enough that I can afford one.:) I'm now looking at an 81 gpz550 in boxes from the shop teacher I bought the KZ from. His asking price is a little high though at $150, going to talk him down.:p
