I was wondering if anyone (w/o luggage) commutes to work with their laptop and how you would protect it from rain? Is there gear on the market that addresses the needs of transporting sensitive equipment like a computer? I live in a really dry area but rain can come w/o warning and come down hard.

Hello there I drive an hour and 20minutes one way to work with my apple g4 laptop. I don't have side bags yet so I take my old llbean backpack strap it to the rear part of the seat with bungee cords and I am off in the mornings it it about 65 right now were I am but the laptop dosent seem to mind. I do wrap it in an old sweat shirt before packing it in with my lunch and papers. It has worked so far but I would like to get something that will protect it better from the rain "just in case I get caught in it" because I usually do not take the bike even if there is a slight chance of rain.

I have the same problem, I am considering a GIVI E52 topcase. Backpacking it so far, have had one rain storm so far, no problems but just tempting fate!

Grow, I would take a look at Pelican cases. They are completely air and waterproof. I know they have models that are specifically size to fit typical laptop dimensions.

I've had several Pelicans mounted as topboxes on previous bikes. If you don't want a topbox, though, you can just use the Pelican case in a similar fashion to what versysred described and strap it to the back of your seat. I've used a bungee net for stuff like that and it's rock solid.

There are tons of places to buy Pelicans, but a little price shopping can save you a few bucks. Here is a link (http://www.caseclub.com/pelican.htm) to one place that price matches so you're guaranteed to get the best price if you do your homework.
