I really like the Tiger 800, which would be a nice performance upgrade from the Versys.

FWIW, tigers are typically solo creatures but a group is called a "streak" (I knew that one) or an "ambush" (that one was new to me). Either would work for a bunch of high speed Triumphs, I think!

Yes... looks like an "almost" perfect bike... 800cc, 3 cyl. so should be smoother than a 2 cyl.... I heard the engine on the videos and sounds really nice.
But I also like my Versys, I wanted to sell my Versys but I regretted it, I'll stay with it for a while...
I think the key is to have both! :devil:

My next bike - I liked the look out of the box when first introduced. I love my V, but a bigger engine and ABS does it for me. Hopefully a good year financially - Spring 2012 one of those bad boys are mine!

I did a short demo ride this weekend on a Tiger 800 at Socal Triumph in Brea, CA. That 3-cylinder is so buttery smooth, you can barely feel it running. And it's power curve is just about perfect, I think. Puts down about 10 more hp than the Versys, up to about 7500rpm where the 650cc twin starts to top out. The 800 triple keeps building power linearly up to 9000rpm. But that linear powerband never surprises you, never feels out of control. The transmission is also super smooth and quiet.

The clutch take-up is also very smooth and predictable. It's as though it has a super-heavy flywheel. Even a hamfisted rider like me turned into a parking lot champ.

The suspension did not impress me as much, but that's not to say it was sub-par. The forks felt harsher than I'd prefer, but those kind of things can be fixed more easily.

The seat is nicely shaped, and the reach to the bars and footpegs is comfortably relaxed, a good compromise between street and dirt. I set the seat to its lowest position and at 5' 8" felt comfortable at stops. (But even better pulling away from those stops WFO.) The windshield is pretty tiny.. would need a bigger one for freeway duty.

The 800cc triple certainly feels wider between the legs, but not excessively so, as I felt on the Tiger 1050. That was the bike I was most looking forward to riding, but it's size and heft put me off. It was fun to ride, and would make the better highway cruiser with it's extra displacement, bigger fairing, 17" wheels, etc. But it handled rather sluggishly around town. And it didn't help that I could only touch toes to the ground.

The guy who wrote the article - Eric - has one on order. He sold his F800GS to be able to get it. That's a pretty darn good endorsement when the dealer is spending his own money for one.

What kind of real world fuel mileage are they getting out of them 800's? For my next bike I have been looking at the Ninja 1000, but the tiger has peeked my interest. Looks like I will need do some home work before my next bike purchase.

Have a Versys goin keep it and get a Tiger with ABS. Rode one yesterday and that engine is kick... I rode on a section of very rough highway in Denver, the suspension is spot on, steers great, power band very linear, but heavier than the V, the geometry is great but not as roomy as my Versys.

fuel consumption varies but it looks like its around 50..55MPrG*, soem report mid to late 40's.

What about the maintenance of the Triumph? I wonder what how much it costs in the long term. I almost bought a Speed Triple just before I bought the Versys. I don't have a lot of spare time for wrenching.

I saw the XC model in the shop yesterday. My immediate thought is that it's larger in person than it is in photographs. Looks to be very well-made, and very purpose-built. The rear of the bike isn't particularly pretty, but it's got a great deal of utility for brackets, luggage, etc.

I suspect the aftermarket is going to have a bloody field day with it.

It was kinda funny - it was a customer bike that came in before the dealer even got their demo unit, so it's sitting there with a SOLD sign on it and everyone - including the dealership personnel, standing around looking at it.

new to forum-just bought a 2008 Versys-but with an id of "nortoneye" I do have a place in the heart for the British machines. Am anxious to see how the Tiger 800 does, one may definately be in the future.

a buddie and I demo rode the tiger 800 XC at motoprimo in MN yesterday-after we each took turn, our simultaneous comment was "wow" power, handling, shifting, riding position, abs--it rides as good as it looks

My dad bought the street Tiger 800 two weeks ago and he loves it. I like it quite a bit too, perhaps in a few years when he gets sick of riding I'll be in a good position to get it from him. Any specific questions, let me know.
