Took a wood beam joist (about $2 at Home Depot), bent the "wings" forward (just for looks but they can be cut off), drilled a couple of holes at bottom of wall to screw on a U-bolt to secure it to the bottom of the stand. Been using it for about a month and it's rock solid (can't twist or work loose), light, does the job and most important, it's cheap.

That's a really good idea. I had a small plate welded onto the bottom of the stand on my KLR. I haven't gotten around to doing anything yet on the Versys, but I will be following your lead really soon.
