: Looking where to buy Rack

I have not been able to come up with a rack specifically for the Versys. The Kawasaki dealers in and around Dallas are idiots and when you say "Versys" they start scratching their *** and looking at the moon. Ok, enough venting.

If someone would please post a link where I can see and buy a rack, please do so. I'd appreciate it.

TwistedThrottle.com sells the SW Motech Rack. It is the exact same rack as in the Kawasaki Acc. catalog. I am in the Dallas area, and you are welcome to come check mine out first hand if you like.

Here is the link, but there is not a pic of it there. http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/3906/652/

It is the same one as in Willie's post. It is very well made, and takes only a few minutes to install.

At least I'll have a picture to show the idiots at the Kawasaki dealership. I doubt if it will help, but I'll try.

Thanks
Don

Yes I did, since it was cheaper and none of my local dealers seemed to be interested in ordering it. Twisted Throttle was $149 + $11 for shipping.

If you like I will shoot a few pics of it tonight.

Took less than a week, but you might want to call and make sure he has stock first.

I will post a few pics tonight for you. I also had a tough time trying to get pics of the unit before ordering.

Here's the Givi rack I got from Twisted Throttle. The J.C. Whitney large trunk I have on it you can get for a little over $50 including shipping. It fits perfectly on the Givi rack. Here's a link to the thread explaining how to get the trunk for $50.

Well, I've got plenty saved to my local HDD! :D

Seriously, there's LOADS of pics around for Givi racks & bags on the Versys on this website. Just do some Digg'n!

I'll have fresh pics of my new baby up soon. I'm still busy "hustling" parts from my last bike to recoup what I've already spent "farkle-ing" the new bike. HaHaHa!!

Take care,
Jim

Hi Dallasdon

Have you tried Grapevine Kawasaki? They seem to be a bit more savvy. I got my bike at Kawasaki City in Irving, but I wouldn't buy farkles from them. It always seems like too much trouble.

I've got your ipod thang sitting here for when we meet! We should hook up with Tapntx and have a N. TX hootenanny!

Les.

Sounds good to me, I am always up for riding. A few retired friends and I try to ride every Thursday morning. Our normal route takes us up to Paris for Lunch, and then up along the Red River, total mileage is around 300.

I live just about right on I-30 in Royse City. If you don't mind I'd like to ride up there on Thursday. That is if it isn't Raining!

Thanks

You got it Don, let this weather clear up and you are welcome to come along. I think we are going to be rained out for tomorrow. Also we do another route that takes us over to Mineola to the E. TX Burger Co.

Lunch in Paris - how romantic ;) Is the large fibreglass soup bull still there???

Somebody should arrange a tour of Europe in Texas - Paris, to Rome to Athens and then a quick detour to my home town - Aberdeen.

I would like to join you also one day. I'm semi-employed so can normally sneak away.

Sure Les, come join us. I too have very flexible hours so I can ride anytime. Hmmm I think the Soup bull is still there, never really pay attention to it. On the other hand though love when Sara Lee is cooking some good pastries :p

$8.70 worth of raw steel. A torch, wire welder and a little cutting, bending and welding and you have a tail rack with saddlebag supports on the cheap. I had not painted them yet at the time of these photos but it works very well.

I am not in to spending to much money on this bike. I like the idea
of removable saddlebags. Would you please take a few more photos
of your racks where and how it attaches to the bike. I would love
to see it. contimplating my own also.
THANKS
dmc51

P.S. it looks to me like you have done a great job on
your design.

-----update, I have ordered some stainless to build my rack, as soon as I get it finished I will post pictures.

In answer to C-C's question "what kind of bags do you have." :They are First Gear Silverstone series (all 4 pieces) from Motorcycle SuperStore motorcyclesuperstore.com all 4 pieces were approx $300.00 total and are excellent quality. These are some of the heaviest denier cordura bags you will find. Be sure when comparing soft luggage to check the density of the cordura materials used. Some budget priced bags have great features and look good (in the photos) but will they hold up? The materials used on these bags is so thick and heavy duty they easily retain their shape(s) even empty. Heck they were empty when I took these pics.

Answer to dmc51's question...:The saddlebag supports attach where the red reflectors were located. I removed the reflectors and the attachment bolt/hardware then replaced it with a longer bolt and a sleeve to set it out a little (approx 1.5") the tail rack is then set inside 3/4" OD square tubing welded to the bag support plates. It is then attached to the rear grab rail mounts under the seat via 5/16" solid rod with washers welded on the ends using the stock mounting bolts. When everything was bolted up it worked great. The rear rack adds rigidity to the saddlebag support plates while the saddlebag plates supply a mounting point for the rack. Everything kind of works in unison. I can remove the tail rack but the bag supports may need a second mount point to be really solid. However the rack will not work without the bag supports because that is the primary mount point. It was a quick sort of on the fly design/fab job because I was leaving the next day and as they say necessity is the Mother of Invention, or is it the other way around. Anyway so far it has served me very well and I have almost nothing in it. Feel free to ask any thing you like.

i like the bags for the money, other than building one what kind of rack would i need to support the rear bag and the 2 side bags ( or will the side bags just strap on the frame)

i would hate the pay around $400 just for frames from give, then pay $300 for the 4 piece kit.

i want to set my versys just like this one (the problem is im not able to build the rack)

Twisted throttle has a rack from SW Motech. As far as I know they do not have photos of it on their site. However if you purchase a tail rack you can run the saddlebags without supports but they will sag under the load of their cargo. An easy fix for this without any real fabrication skills or equipment would be some oblong or oval plates easily fasioned out of 1/16" - 1./8" sheet metal approx 4" X 8" bolted on in place of the rear reflector to keep the bags somewhat level and out of harms way. If you are riding solo and have no need for additional carrying capacity (ie: duffle bag) between you and the tail bag your easiest and least expensive solution is to mount the tail bag to the pillion portion of the seat and use only the supplied straps from First Gear. I ran the bags in this configuration for a couple of months before taking the extended trip requiring the additional capacity. Again the attached photos are using no supports or anything save for the straps and bungee's that came with the bags. Here are some photos of the bike in this configuration.
