: Exhaust system roll call....

I have to say, the level of conversation in this forum is certainly on the low side. I think most of us are also members of versys.co.uk, but a lot of whats discussed over there is only available across the pond!
So for those who live in North America, lets here from all y'all about the exhaust pipes you have, want, NEED.... If you have experience with a Ninja 650 and that bikes exhaust, please talk about it as well cause most manufacturers call the part one and the same as what we would need!!

I will start....

I am looking into exhaust right now. My favorite appearance is split between the Ixil twin pipe and the Laser X-treme twin pipe. However, both of those are pricey. The Ixil is, at best, $499 and the Laser I was able to find for $625 shipped.
Sadly, money is an issue (planning a wedding), so the next choices are either the Jardine GP-1 for $219, the Arrow slip-on, Skorpion Slip On and the Muzzy Slip on for $269, The Leo Vince for $279, or the TBR for $339.

Please let me know what you all think, any videos you have, sound clips, etc!!

I vote for the Ixil twin pipe exhaust. Check it out on Youtube under Ixil and Versys. I know it costs more, just save a little longer to get what you want, it'll be worth it. That's what I'm going to do.

Hello! I just spent about an hour on YouTube.com listening to all of the exhaust systems you named in your thread. I personally like the Scorpion exhaust best followed by the Muzzy exhaust. I didn't look under the Versys though to hear the exhaust. I typed in Kawasaki Ninja 650R and there were quite a few videos. I imagine an exhaust that fits the 650 Ninja would also fit the Versys. I'm thinking about getting one after I get my bike inspected. I'll wait until after that just incase they say it's to loud. Had the Versys on the highway today and opened it up a little. It ran 5,500 rpm's at 80 mph and 6,500 rpm's at 90 mph. The speedometer reads a good 5 mph faster than what you're actually going if not even 10 mph.

a guy i work with is sponsored by FMF.... he gets a 50% discount, so i'm looking to try their motoGP style exhaust (which looks badass) It's made
for the Ninja, so i'm going to look at what it'll take to make it fit- it might just bolt up, but i called them and they didn't know. they did, however, tell me
to just send it back if it doesn't fit (just don't run the bike with it on and they would take it back!)

while i can't offer you guys the 50% off deal, i can pass on some pics and knowledge! stay posted.

Greetings,

I’m new to this forum and I don’t even own a Versys yet; but I will sometime in the fall of 08 or early 09 when the prices are way down, or so I’m hoping. I’ve been reading some of the posts about changing exhaust systems for your Versys but this would apply to any model of motorcycle and that is, you run the risk of VOIDING YOUR WARRANTY if your modifications cause damage to any other part of the motorcycle ie engine, wiring etc. So be aware of those implications before buying an expensive exhaust system.

Even if you buy your exhaust system from a dealer (they’re in business to make money so they have no obligation to TELL OR REMIND you that you may be voiding your warranty) so take some advice from an old geezer and don’t do it unless/until your warranty has terminated. ;)

I like the sound of a good pipe myself but not at the expense of voiding my warranty---I can wait a year! :)

On the same note, once I get my Versys I will change the exhaust a bit; I personally want to use my bike truly as a dual purpose machine so I want the exhaust on the side and a bit higher in case I go through a stream boon dogging it.

Regards,
David

I've listened to a bunch of exhausts on youtube, and checked out most of them online for purchase as well. My choice will be the Two Bros system, I think it sounds foo-king sick, is only about $350, and weighs in at only 3.5 lbs, compared to 12.7 lbs stock!!! I think it is one of the better looking pipes as well.

I bought my V from the dealer with a titanium Leo Vince slip on. Wonderful sound and it looks great. Heres a link to the US site.

Leo Vince's are really nice pipe. Good quality Italian product. Even tho their logo does look a little like Mrs. Pac-man. :)

I agree about Leo Vince's high quality for the money. I think you would do well with it, DanPorges. I'd avoid the cheap and loud Jardine... My Muzzy header and slip-on system was only $360 plus shipping. I just had a baffle plate added to make it quieter.

The problem with using youtube is that you don't really get a good feel for what it is going to sound like.

I remember when I was young and my dad got a new stereo and I called my friend up and said "listen to this bass, man!"... and held the phone up like an idiot.

The scorpion sounds awesome on youtube but I've heard they make the bike sound like a V8 and are extremely loud in reality.

I've personally heard a scorpian pipe on a 650 ninja, man was it loud.... I like the idea of losing some weight and picking up some power, but the noise may become too much....I'm making changes to my V so it will be better on the long trips, so i'm not sure if the noise is in my interests at the moment.

I've got the Leo Vince stainless evol slip on. I love it, not to loud and has a great sound and I get higher speeds per RPMs. The directions for installation were not so great but it wasn't hard to figure out.

Get you a$$ busy and install it NOW. :D

I just installed the Arrow header to go along with my previously purchased Arrow slip-on can. All I can say after a quick ride (in the dark, so I was taking it fairly easy) in the neighborhood is HOLY CRAP! This made all the difference in the world. I thought the Arrow can & PCIII made a huge difference. This REALLY brought the beast out. SMOOTH is the key word. Bike now loves to run in the 5k RPM range with NO VIBRATION at all. And this was with a PCIII basemap! :D

I'm going to load a copy of BicycleBob's dyno tuned map in the morning (thanks again Robert!!) This should make even more of a HOLY CRAP difference. For the money, you CAN'T BEAT the complete Arrow system, hands down.

More later,

Edit: BTW, this is all WITH the DB killer in. I like it quiet most, if not all the time. But, for the hooligan moments that we all have, the DB killer is easily removed and this can sounds fabulous!!!

Danger Man,

I installed it this weekend. I love the look and the sound. Nice weight savings. A couple of friends stopped by and really liked the look. I am suffering with a minor exhaust leak, so I may get some joint tape and re-attach. I also notice the clearance to the rear tire is quite close but as the bike is only 1000 miles old the chain is at its "tightest" on the swingarm so not worried. I love the sound, seat of pants tells me the throttle response has improved but no real gains otherwise. I don't have headers at this point. No PCIII at this point either. I have to stop spending money, help me! "Mods" so far
-Full set of Dowco Fastrax Luggage: VERY nice soft luggage.

-Ixil twin pipe cans
-Just ordered a R+G tail tidy which should arrive shortly. I was going to chop off the rear fender vis a vis Bearonabike (I really like his mods) but decided to keep the stock rear fender handy.
Love this bike. I used to road race and have owned about 15 bikes of all kinds. This bike is just a blast to ride. I intend on doing some track days with it next year. Cheers.

Oh yeah, the Ixil set up comes with a bung hole for the "Lambda Sonda" (oxygen sensor) which you need to plug. I used a oil drain bolt with the proper thread pitch worked fine. You can buy an "oxygen sensor plug" which is the same thing and pay anywhere from 6-20 bucks. My solution cost 2.50.

You are correct. Slightly lower (23mm) and back. These are fully adjustable, and have multiple options for lowering as well (23, 30 & 50mm.)

Just a note here for everyone's information. The Center Stand that I have been developing for the past year will soon be in production. There is something everyone should know before spending a lot of money on exhaust if they plan on fitting the Center Stand to their bikes. The Center stand will not work with any exhaust longer than the stock muffler. I'm not trying to put a damper on changing your exhaust. It just a "heads up" for your information. If you are unfamiliar with the new Center Stand comming out, here's a link that will let you know a little about it.

My friend franklinstetler, these things are RARELY about need. It's more about want. I agree with your inference, I doubt you'd see much gain on a dyno. The main difference I see, is the joiner tube between the pipes. I believe it has something to do with pressure/flow for the exhaust valves, but I don't know the benefits of having it vs not.

MTC are as far as I know only stocked in the UK, there are 2 or 3 stockinsts but most sales are done direct from MTC. they sell/ship worldwide, when I had mine fitted they were sendign stuff to Bermuda, the caribbean and Australia.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5902uRnzXTg (2nd bike has a MTC can)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thz1teh9or0&feature=related (3rd has a MTC can)
theres a mix of stock, MTC & Ixils in the above youtube excerpts

to my untutored eye they look well made, shiny shiny stainless, the baffles can be removed if you so wish. They are road legal in the UK (stamped with BSAU), however whether they are road legal in the US I dunno.

MTC are a two man band so don't expect big company documentation, customer service departments and other medium/big company things. Subtle the MTC can isn't. As MTC make 'em in house they should be able to meet any sepcial requirements you have (such as blocking off or not making the hole for the lambada sensor.

Finally got the Jardine GP1 today, and installed, but raining and cold. Will have pics and sound soon, I think friday might be decent. Not a whole lot of clearance from the tire and swing arm, I think if I got air it would touch pretty hard. Didn't install the noise dampener, pretty loud, but not too loud. I was used to a big v-twin with straight pipes before though. I really like the tone, can't wait to have her screaming on the highway to see how it really sounds, rather then reving in the shed.

I just installed a Leo Vince oval today, and it is LOUD with an open pipe. The Db killer tones it down quite a bit, and I think I can play around with it by shortening the tube that extends up into the muffler. The best thing is that it now sounds like a real motorcycle, kind of like my 1967 Triumph TT, instead of a tinny sounding hedge trimmer.

If you're considering one of these, do like I did, and drill a small hole through both the tail pipe and the Db killer, and install a cotter pin so you won't lose the Db killer on the road when the little 4mm screw that retains it buzzes loose and falls out.

It sure is nice to lose that 20+ lb. brick from under the bike. It seems like the throttle response at low rpms is a lot smoother and less notchy than it was with the stock system.

I'm leaning towards the leo, too. the best looking pipe out there, IMHO. one trick i use is to remove the cores and pound three lengthwise dimples into the cores with a ball peen or body hammer. minimal core diameter loss, but provides more surface area for sound dampening. i always have extra packing mat'l laying around, so I use it to repack tightly upon reassembly.

So here are some pics of the Jardine GP1 exhaust. I took a video but the mic did it no justice at all, nor did the laptop speakers. So when I ordered this slip on there was no listing for the versys just the 650r, but looking at other slip on exhaust part numbers they were the same. It fits pretty close to the rear tire, but so did the stock brick. Its super light, sounds great and though it might be psychological I've noticed a big performance gain, mostly in throttle response, but the front wheel likes to pull up a bit more too. I'd like to get it beside someones with a two brothers or scorpion to compare in person, anyone coming out to Nova Scotia let me know.

Well, the big brown Van brought my much awaited surprise this afternoon. I finally get to see and touch a Jardine GP-1 exhaust.

Anxiously, I starting to prepare to put this bad boy on. I loosened everything up and tried slipping the stocker off it's perch but had a slight problem. The rear tire was in the way. I couldn't get the stocker off. So it was either get the rear tire loose slide it back or loosen up the header pipe bolts. I chose that route.

After a short period of time the Jardine was on and I was firing that bad boy up. WOW the Jardine sounds so good.

Initial thoughts after a 5 minute ride. The bike sounds so amazing now. It really doesn't seem that loud when your on the bike. But, when my step-son took it for a ride, it sounded strong hearing it with him on the bike.

One thing I noticed. Granted I'm still in the break-in period with about 575 miles on the bike. I noticed how quick and easy the bike now rev's in the rpm's. before the rpm's would take a small amount of time before it got to say 4k or 5k in rpm's. With the Jardine it's at 4k to 5k rpm's in a heartbeat. I would highly recommend to NOT have this pipe on during break-in, and glad I "almost"waited until my break-in was done.

Jardine installed this afternoon. Its no louder than the Two Bros on my SV. I love the sound thats for sure. I tried it with the baffle in that they send and it made the note to high pitched. Without the baffle its a nice deep throaty sound. Love it!!

EDIT ok after the ride to work I am going to fab up something to make the baffle mellow this thing out a bit. LOL
