The owner's manual supplied with Canadian bikes stipulates that the valves should be inspected every 24,000 kms. Why it's different for the Canadian bikes from everywhere else in the world, I don't know, but there it is. I have 20,000 kms on my bike after 2 years and I intend to inspect the valves sometime this riding season, but it'll be at my convenience. I don't see any reason why it has to be right at 24k on the button, especially if everything seems to be working well. Same with greasing the steering head bearings: that'll get done sometime this summer.
