Dual Sport Tyre Size

Hello,

I am looking to make a trip up to the himalayas and maybe Kishtwar which is the world's deadliest road >:)

I am in India, and we have no access to quality dual sport tyres for 17 inch wheels here (forget about the right profile sizes).

I have managed to find Vee Rubber VRM 163 tyres. However, they only have the 130/80/17 size available.

I checked online over on a tyre size calculator and this is what I get for the rear: https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc?tires=160-60r17-130-80r17

and for the Front: https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc?tires=120-70r17-130-80r17

Doesnt seem too bad. I understand that I will need to raise the front fender. Is that all?

Anything else I need to be aware of? I will be doing a lot of offroad in the mountains. There's a considerable stretch of freeway to reach the mountains, but I guess I'll take things easy until I reach (120-130 kph). No rains on the freeways predicted, so I am not worried about wet weather tarmac riding with these tyre either.

So?

PS: The only other Dual Sport available in India is from Heidenau and they cost 500$ for the pair. NO.

Try and get the Vee Rubber VRM 401 dual sport tyres
The 130/80x17 should fit the front when raising the front mudguard
The 150/70x17 will fit the rear OK

Richard
Richard, thank you.

However, we don't get the VRM 401 here. Only the VRM 163 and 193 are available.

150 dual sport tyres not available. Only the 130/80/17 and the 140/70/17.

None of these bikes are sold in India. I wish I could afford another motorcycle for escapades like these, but I don't think I can in the short-medium term.

I have run Metzler Tourances (and presently Shinko E705s) in 130/80-17 on the front (a rear tire), and 150/70-17 on the rear. As well as raising your front fender, it will take you an hour or so to get used to the feeling from the 130/80 as it (INITIALLY) felt as tho' it wouldn't turn, but shortly you don't even notice it being different. Here are two threads I posted about the issue:

Eddie, thanks. So I see that the front can go with the 130/80. Do I have to change the brake lines and such or can I get away with just sizing up the front fender with a longer bracket? I have a 2016 V.

More importantly:
I can't find a 150 size dual sport tyre in India for the rear. I either probably have the choice of a 140/70/17 or a 130/80/17. I currently ride with a 150/60/17 Michelin Pilot Street on the rear, which has done just fine the past 8,000 kms.

But I wonder if I go down further in width in the rear - will I have any problems? :crying: Will the tyre unseat itself off the rim? Changing the rim is not an option for me.
