Yeah, impacts are nice for stuff like this. I've also seen people secure the rear wheel against the swingarm thereby holding the sprocket with the chain tension. The rear brake can also be applied. It's really not so tough of a job on the Versys but can be a real bear on some bikes. Anyway, glad this technique worked out for you.
