2012 KTM 690 Duke

She is Heavy, She is My Versys.


Of late, have been having difficulties manoeuvring the Versys around the city.
She is heavy and I have a physique matching that of Goofy.
Needed a lighter bike and yet have enough oomph to join the boys on sunday mornings, riding up the nearby hills.

This Austrian lass, the 2012 KTM 690 Duke matched my requirements well.

Weighing in at 330 pounds dry against the Versys 453 pounds, that's a few sacks of potatoes off my toothpick legs.
Yet this single 690 cc thumper pushes 70 HP @ 7500 rpm. That's plenty of horses for a light bike.
Specs are good too. Slipper (anti-hopping) clutch. Switchable ABS. Twin plug ignition. Ride by wire.

After riding junior Duke for a few weeks, comments are :

the 690 is not really ideal for arrow straight highways or long distance touring, for this the bigger 990 SMT/Adventure twins are obviously better choices. but i needed a lighter bike.
being light makes overtaking or being overtaken by large vehicles a nervy affair. cross winds unfriendly.
vibrations at cruising speeds (80 mph/130 kph) numb the fingers..
definitely a fast, fun bike for winding mountain or country roads on any sundays.
then come mondays n week days, it's a great light n nimble commuter bike to attack the congested city streets n arrive for work with a smile.
the styling is less aggressive than last year but has a more comfortable seat.

the KTM being a big bore single, red lines at 8000 rpm (Versys @ 10500 rpm).
she will jerk n then stall in third gear below 2000 rpm.
but the V can do 2000 rpm in third gear n still pull away smoothly.
hence a lot of gear shifting with the KTM. the gear changing is also very soft, unlike the clunky but positive shifts of the V.
the feather light hydraulic clutch helps a lot.
often i hve engaged a mid-gear neutral accidentally on the KTM.
then gassed the bike n left with a screaming engine but not going anywhere.

But I love her. brings out the hooligan in me when i feel naughty yet pretending to be a small nice bike when mom visits.

that's a muffler slider / guard.
DIY for US$2 from a heat resistant hydraulic hose n clamp.

APA sells them at US$30.

Nice bike. Saw a black one at the dealer a while back.

Wet weight of the 690 Duke is 374 lbs, vs Versys wet at 453 lbs. Still a substantial variance, but compare apples to apples.

phil, riding the Versys two up to Koh Samui in July.
bike will then be sold after the trip. has buyer in the wings and it's spoken for.

bones, oops, dry weights KTM/Versys 330/398 pounds respectively. TQ. make that a sack of potatoes lighter then !.

No disrespect intended


Handling a bike is not a mather of height, weight, strenght

It's a mather of technic

Their a 5' 1" women in this forum that looooooves her V and has not complaint about the bike size/weight

So maybe you like better the ktm ( actualy this is a VERY VERY nice bike), but the V is an easy bike to handle

I draged a freind 3weeks ago to a day of formation, something like MSR in the us, maybe something is available in your country that's similar and could be insightfull
My freind was extatic at the end of the day, AND he tells me that he has being enjoying is r1200rt so much more since that day and doing things that he never tought he would do

Well I guess you get the picture

LP, points noted n agree that technique plays an important part.
however i have difficulty in manoeuvring the Versys in crawling traffic. top heavy n unable to push/pull it. but find this not a problem with the KTM. the Duke is much lighter n to me, very Goofy friendly !.

perhaps will need to sign up with MSR n fall in love with the V all over again.

No worries. I don't quite get why manufacturers still bother quoting dry weights. Until such time as we ride petrol-powered motorbikes without benefit of fuel or lubricants, dry weight really seems irrelevant.

Because that low # sounds better. Or you get a bike with a bigger tank(great for riding as you can go further) but the extra fuel will weigh more for advertising.

Eggs Benedict...... My favorite now this thread has made me hungry... I guess alot of us are like the manufacturers. We know our real weight but post or advertised weight. Came close to buying a Duke a fews years back.Always wished i would have done it.

Sat on three KTM 990's and a 690 at the dealer the other day. I'm not sure what model the 690 was, but while the 990s were HIGH, the 690 was REALLY high!!!

As in - ONLY ONE toe touching at a time!

ahhh, saw the original Duke way back in the mid nineties n lusted for one since.
AND it is a LIGHT bike.
AND it is white.
AND my big brother has the black one.
and ..... and ..... and ......

the seat height for this model is 32.9 inches.
the enduro models like the 690 Enduro R is up in the clouds at 36.8 inches.

had to Wiki eggs benedict to find out what i am missing.
then ate a virtual breakfast.
yummy.
