After a long Winter and wet Spring, I finally got out for some good riding! Where I live in SW Ontario, the ground is flat and the roads are straight. If you hunt around some you can find a few good roads, but most of the area was laid out in a flat, straight grid.
Here's a pretty common view. You can watch your dog run away all day...
I made some stops in St Thomas, Ontario. This town was built by the railroad industry, being located strategically between Chicago and NY. Most of the RR has long since declined. This is a huge rail line bridge that has not seen a train in many years. The current plan is to convert it to an elevated park with green space, benches, gazeebos, etc.
Jumbo the elephant, a famous player in P.T. Barnum's Circus, died in St. Thomas, over 125 years ago - 15 Sep 1885. This was the grand days of the railroad in St Thomas, and the circus - of course - travelled by train. Jumbo was struck and killed by a train in the rail yard.
In 1985 a lifesize statue was built to comemorate the 100th Anniversary. After years of wear and tear, it was recently refurbished and re-opened. Today, the Railway City Brewing Co, a local micro-brewery, makes a strong 6.5%alc India Pale Ale called: Dead Elephant.
And here's a couple from the St Thomas Airport (YQS) on my way out of town...
This is Canada.
