The province of Quebec recently banned the use of all season tires during winter months. Too early to tell the effect of this but I am expecting a dramatic reduction in the type of accidents where someone slides off the road or into another car. Is it worth it? We'll find out but personally I would never drive on all season tires in the winter as dedicated snow tires offer such a dramatic improvement in traction over all season tires on snow covered roads.

The problem with freedom of choice in matters like this is other people's stupid choices affect my own safety on the road.

First ride of the season yesterday. -7C (19F) thank god for heated grips! With wind factor when riding it's probably more around -20C (-4F)...Also very happy with the Heidenau K73 tires then can handle it all.

Sometimes it's hard to keep things in perspective regarding snow. Here in NJ, snow has a 24 hour shelf life.. It would be long gone before you could even think about mounting a snow tire.
What actually qualifies as a snow tire for a motorcycle? If you need them that bad should you even be on two wheels?

Here snow can have a shelf life of months :P Snow tires for motorcycles do not exist. You can put studs on tires, but then you've had excellent grip on ice, and terrible grip on asphalt.

The tires I use are racing rain tires, the biggest advantage is the semi-knobbies and softer rubber that performs well even in the cold. Now I have ridden a bit in snow covered roads, but not out of choice and its very dangerous since it can be icy under it. But I just wish they changed the law to let us ride during winter when the weather allows it. But basically I put these tires on in Fall and take then off late Spring to put on Pilot Roads for example...

Well the roads aren't quite ready, and the weather's not quite ready, but I was ready. Took the Versys out of hibernation storage today and thoroughly enjoyed a 16 km ride home. Born again.

This is Canada.

After a long Winter and wet Spring, I finally got out for some good riding! Where I live in SW Ontario, the ground is flat and the roads are straight. If you hunt around some you can find a few good roads, but most of the area was laid out in a flat, straight grid.

Here's a pretty common view. You can watch your dog run away all day...

I made some stops in St Thomas, Ontario. This town was built by the railroad industry, being located strategically between Chicago and NY. Most of the RR has long since declined. This is a huge rail line bridge that has not seen a train in many years. The current plan is to convert it to an elevated park with green space, benches, gazeebos, etc.

Jumbo the elephant, a famous player in P.T. Barnum's Circus, died in St. Thomas, over 125 years ago - 15 Sep 1885. This was the grand days of the railroad in St Thomas, and the circus - of course - travelled by train. Jumbo was struck and killed by a train in the rail yard.

In 1985 a lifesize statue was built to comemorate the 100th Anniversary. After years of wear and tear, it was recently refurbished and re-opened. Today, the Railway City Brewing Co, a local micro-brewery, makes a strong 6.5%alc India Pale Ale called: Dead Elephant.

And here's a couple from the St Thomas Airport (YQS) on my way out of town...

This is Canada.

Always trust your cape.

The last bits of snow/ice are finally disappearing in central Alberta and the bikes are out. Probably the latest start to the bike season in 10 years.

Jeff - I'm NOT "screwin with your head"..., but here are TWO pics I JUST took from my balcony...!

You're ONE province too far EAST!

-

I rode that 'nice' road between Vernon and Kelowna yesterday, south to north, then cut west and rode the Westside Road south, to West Kelowna. It was almost TOO hot....
