San Diego in February, the 13th to 17th

I forgot to write this trip up. Went to California to see the Midway WW2 aircraft carrier (finished TWO weeks AFTER the end of that war!), plus some other stuff.

Took a look at the shoreline near Carlsbad, and even saw a few birds....

Here's the scene upon entering the 'hangar-deck' of the Midway,

and just to the S once you get to the flight-deck is this SUPER-SIZED statue of the "KISS", the famous one of a 'gob' kissing a young woman near Times Square in New York

and from there it's a collection of Korean and Viet-Nam war era aircraft..., but across the bay were these TWO modern nuclear-powered carriers (I believe the 'Roosevelt' and 'Ronald Reagan').

Here's a Vigilante,

a Skyraider,

a Banshee (or Panther),

an F-4 Phantom,

an F-8 Crusader (supersonic fighter), an A-6 behind it,

an electronic surveillance a/c,

the F-8 again,

a subsonic A-7 Corsair which could carry MORE than its 'empty-weight' in external stores,

the flight-deck from the bridge,

and ONE of those nuclear carriers getting 'under-way,

w/ what appears to be an F-18 on the deck.

VERY nice way to spend a few days....

Really enjoy your aircraft photos, especially the Banshee and A-7, but for entirely different reasons. As I recall in the film "Hunt for Red October" a wounded F-18 was approaching its carrier and, as it crashed on deck, it mysteriously changed itself into a Banshee. A here-to-fore little known highly advanced (or would that be retro) Navy technology apparently.

And I've always had a soft spot for the A-7 just because it's a very capable, but often overlooked, aircraft from the old days. Never the top dog but always a faithful one nonetheless.

Thanks for the photos, Ed.

There's a famous film of an F-100 Super Sabre crashing that has "taken the place" of F-86 Sabres (as well as others, I'm sure) in movies out of Hollywood. The F-100 was prone to 'super-stalling' if you over-rotated it on take-off, then doing a 'crash-and-burn' usually killing the pilot. One day a USAF pilot got into a super-stall, but managed to fly out of it, saving himself and the aircraft.

After talking w/ others about how he'd done it, he volunteered to do it again, on film, to show how it was done, and thus the "famous film" wherein he did NOT fly out of it, dying in the fiery crash, which then was used in MANY films where another type was crashing.

Sad.

I would have LOVED to fly the A-7!!!
