BigLefti, myself and another ADV rider from Canada are riding four peaks on Wednesday March 1, open invitation to other forum members.
Four Peaks Wilderness Area is east off Hwy 87, roughly 16 miles north from the intersection of Shea and 87. We'll be meeting at 9:30 AM at the Chevron at 10180 N Fort McDowell Rd, Fort McDowell, AZ 85264 which is on 87 about 3/4 of a mile north of Shea, across from the casino, east side.
We're expecting typical AZ forest road terrain, starting on Cline Cabin Rd to SVR Rd 143 to Lone Pine Trail to El Oso Rd which ends up on Hwy 188. From there, we'll decide to run north up 188 to the 87 intersection and back, or south on 188 to either Apache Trail back (Roosevelt Dam rd) or back through Globe and Hwy 60. I suspect calories will be on the agenda once we get back to pavement. The dirt portion is tough to estimate distance precisely, but looks to be about 30 miles.
I've never travelled this road, some ride reports call it a 'gravel highway', but there are alternate routes to the one we've chosen that others have described as 'technical' - our ambition is non-technical, mostly. FastEddie - I suspect you've done this route - any thoughts or suggestions?
There may be snow at the higher elevations, and the maximum elevation on this route is about 5,800 ft. We're not looking for a death march - if it's ugly or the road is closed by the Forest Service, we'll turn back. I recommend warm layers if you're coming.
This should be a fun ride, huge vistas and interesting flora. The area had a burn some time ago but is apparently recovering nicely and with the rains this winter, should be about as good as it ever gets. Weather report is good, roads should be dry, minimal if any water to cross.
All are welcome.
