Fork Oil

Since there don't seem to be any good front suspension options to reduce brake sag because aftermarket springs are too stiff and pricey, I had the fork oil and seals changed instead. It's like a new suspension. This 2008 was bought used with 7500 miles, now has 9600, and I assume never had the fork oil replaced. The rear shock has always seemed just fine to me.

Did you used a different oil weight or the standard 10wt?

Current : Maroon 2011.
- Front Fender Extender - Radiator Guard - 19mm Nissin radial master pump - Nissin 4-pot caliper - SS Brake lines - Osram Nightbreakers+ low, Osram Hyper Rallye 65W high - LED 30w spotlights & 3w DRLs - Rear Hugger - Givi crash guards - Yoshimura TRC Carbon - Dynojet PC5 - Scottoiler - R1 shock with Ohlins 14.2 kg/mm spring - Imitation Givi Windshield - Rear Givi rack with 24ltr Givi top box - Bosch dual tones - Z800 stock mirrors.

No, I had the stock 10W installed. I know people use ATF, but what viscosity is it?

Original Showa SS8 (SAE 10W) fork fluid has a viscosity of 36.47 cSt @ 40C (104F), 7.24 cSt @ 100C (212F) and 167 viscosity index. It also looks and smells just like ATF.

Fasteddiecoperman used WalMart's Super Tech High Mileage ATF made by Warren Performance Products (WPP), most likely the equivalent of http://www.wd-wpp.com/greases/greases008.pdf which has a viscosity of 34.5 cSt @ 40C, 7.3 cSt @ 100C, and 187 VI... Viscosity and viscosity index vary between different types and brands of ATF, and between different brands of 10W fork fluid.

Fork operating temperature is normally at about 26~33C (78~91F) in 21-28C (70-83F) ambient temperatures.

With maximum or near maximum fork spring preload, I get sufficient rebound damping and motion control with 12.5W, a half and half mixture of 10W and 15W fork fluid.

Aftermarket springs are too stiff and too pricey? You should be able to order the spring weight you want that will work best for your weight and style of riding. I prefer straight rate springs on my bikes.

HyperPro has progressive springs (either 30mm lower, or stock height) which eliminate most of the dive when braking hard. Also improved the ride for me (200# with gear).
