I purchased a Puig engine guard. It fits over the frame bar and the forward mount. The rear hole is about 1/2" off, and is the incorrect size. I guess my question is, do all of these have to be modified to fit?
Mine also did poorly fit, had to put them on in a specific order - IIRC it was as follows:
1. hang in the upper extra brackets and put in the screws as loose as possible
2. put in front bolts at the engine block - loose
3. put in bolt at lower engine block - loose
4. tighten the 3 big bolts step by step (see note below, might need to redo the step 3 a few times)
5. tighten the screws at the upper brackets
I remember it was a pain in the butt getting them on, and not even the screw nuts for the lower bolt were working properly. And the spacers for that bolt were too short as well. Had the dealer putting in additional washers when I turned the V in for its first service.
Note: pay special attention to this small moving transmission thing right underneath the rear end of the left crashbar, the one which is pushed/pulled by the gear shift - if your spacers are too small as mine are it will get damaged when tighten the lower screw nuts due to a lack of space. Put in additional washers to avoid the bar being pulled in too far.
If yours fit even worse than mine I'd recommend to return them (I didn't because I would have had to ship them over the pond, and I needed them to get going...)

Now I noticed that the front clamp where the right guard is mounted to the engine did brake apart. Seems the material didn't stand the forces due to the poor fit. However, I'm in contact with PUIG now, hoping that the do a goodwill exchange or so.
Talked to Puig and they agreed in a warranty exchange, handled through Amazon. Unfortunately the second set didn't fit also, getting my money back and sending the new ones retour.
In the meantime I got new guards made by Givi and did put them on today. They go to the same mount points as the Puig's, but as others reported there is a flaw as well: the bolts which come with the Givi guards are all metric M10 with pitch of 1.25. That's ok for the front ones, but the one at the lower end now differs from the stock and the Puig ones: they were M10 1.50, which means the remining lock nut doesn't fit.
However, got some at the hardware store and am quite happy to have guards again, just in case, you know?...
To everyone above: What GEN of V are you talking about? McFiscH seems to have a Gen 2. Looking at the available pics the mounting points and bar designs are different from generation to generation. I have a '16 and am thinking heavily about the DIMOTOV. I like how it sticks out, which might provide a little leg protection and it looks like I can mount lights to it. I'm slowly converting mine into a mild ADV bike. Yeah, I know, if I really wanted an ADV bike I should have bought a purpose built one, but I like the Versys.
